Description

Role

The University of Nottingham has joined four other universities across the UK to launch mA*ths Online, a programme targeted at Year 12 Maths students from communities underrepresented in Higher Education.

This year we will be supporting 50 A-Level Maths students from the East Midlands as they develop the skills they need to achieve an A* in A-level Maths, and build their confidence to apply to universities that require an A* in A-level Maths for their chosen subject.

The programme includes in-person Masterclasses hosted at the university, online mentoring sessions and MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses. You will support participants online and in person, helping them to achieve their aspirations as they look to study STEM courses at university and go on to have successful careers in their chosen field.

In the process you will gain experience of mentoring and tutoring, and your support will ensure that our Masterclass events run smoothly and are both useful and memorable for participants.

This is a developmental opportunity for University of Nottingham students, and we expect mentors to acquire and develop a wide number of employability skills through this role. Mentors will receive supervision from a member of staff in the university’s Access and Widening Participation Team who has overall responsibility for the scheme and is available for guidance, support and advice as needed.

Mentors are expected to attend two in-person Masterclasses, and lead three mentoring sessions per mentoring week, lasting two hours each. There will be 6 mentoring weeks in total. Mentors must be able to commit to all of the dates which can be found on the role profile form which is linked in the application form.

The programme will repeat in the Autumn and Spring terms 2027/8 and successful applicants will have the opportunity to continue their role if desired.

An enhanced DBS check will be required for the role which the University of Nottingham will arrange for successful candidates.
