Are you passionate about equality, diversity and making sure everyone feels welcome and valued at Middlesex? We're looking for students who want to share their perspectives, bring fresh ideas and help create an even more inclusive university experience. As a Race Equality Rep, you'll work alongside students and university staff to celebrate diversity, champion inclusive practices and contribute to meaningful initiatives that make a positive difference. You don't need to be an expert in race equality, just someone who's open to listening, learning and working with others to help make Middlesex a place where everyone can thrive.
The Race Equality Charter (REC), developed by Advance HE, helps universities identify and address the barriers experienced by Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students. It provides a framework for improving race equality, promoting inclusion and creating an environment where everyone can thrive.
The Self-Assessment Team (SAT) oversees the development, implementation and monitoring of the University’s REC action plan, and supports our REC submissions. It brings together staff and students from across academic, research, technical and Professional Services areas, representing a range of races, ethnicities, faiths, cultures, disciplines and stages of study. This diversity helps ensure our work is informed by evidence and reflects the experiences of our whole community.
We are recruiting up to six students into paid roles on the REC team, in partnership with MDXSU. Students are full members of the team. You will bring the student perspective directly into how the University understands and tackles racial inequality, and into the changes we make as a result.
Duties and responsibilities
What you will do:
- Attend the main Self-Assessment Team meetings across the year.
- Join one of the three sub-strands and contribute to its work across the year. The three strands are Culture and Policy; Staff Recruitment and Progression; and Education and Student Experience.
- Help plan and deliver new initiatives and changes across the University and Students’ Union as part of your strand.
- Review data and evidence and contribute to engagement activities that gather the views of students and staff.
- Share your own experience and perspectives and listen carefully to the experiences of others.
Skills and experience
Selection criteria
The following are essential for the role:
- You must be a current Middlesex University student.
- A commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and race equality.
- A willingness to develop evidence-informed and intersectional ideas to address racial inequities.
- Strong collaboration and active listening, and a willingness to learn from others.
- An interest in working with qualitative and quantitative evidence, with attention to detail.
- Self-awareness and reflective practice, including recognising your own perspectives and biases.
- An interest in how effective EDI practice shapes organisational culture and drives positive change.
- An understanding of the need to respect confidentiality and the views of others.
