Description

Role

The role involves working with a small team of professional colleagues in the Library and Academic Skills team to support students in developing their library and academic skills. The ability to demonstrate and apply these skills effectively enables students to make better progress in their learning journeys, leading to improved retention rates and student satisfaction. It is particularly important to support students who are transitioning to university from school or college, as well as those returning to higher education (HE) after a period away from study.

Duties and responsibilities

The role holder will primarily support undergraduate and postgraduate students in developing their library and academic skills, including academic writing and reading, referencing, finding suitable resources, digital literacy and critical analysis.

This support will be delivered through online and in-person teaching sessions timetabled for large class groups, smaller online group workshops and individual one-to-one support sessions.

The role holder will also be responsible for liaising with academic colleagues by attending relevant committee meetings, representing the Library and advising on any issues that arise.

Skills and experience

Ideally, the role holder will be a qualified librarian. However, teaching experience and a teaching qualification, such as the PGCHPE, PGCE, SFHEA or FHEA, may be even more important.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working with students at higher education (HE) or further education (FE) level. They will have good digital skills, the confidence to present to a class of students and the ability to create an appropriate learning environment.
