Role
The University is seeking four postgraduate students to support the Friday Jummah prayer in the Great Hall during the Undergraduate teaching term.

Duties and responsibilities

• Collecting prayer mats from the storage room and transporting them to the Great Hall.

• Laying the mats our neatly and placing them the Partition boards along the the length of the hall separating male and female prayer area.

• Welcoming and directing students and staff through the designated male and female entrances.

• Managing the orderly entry of worshippers during the first Jummah.

• When the hall reaches its capacity, closing the entrance when instructed by the Imam or designated person in charge. No individual exceptions should be made. Even if requested or pressured by students or staff.

• After the first Jummah. allowing worshippers to leave before admitting those waiting for the second prayer.

• Supporting the orderly admission and departure of worshippers for the final Jummah.

• Directing the students and staff to the ablution and toilet fascilities.

• Ensuring the walk ways in the Great Hall are clear of shoes and personal belongings.

• After the final Prayer, encouraging worshippers to leave promptly so that the hall can be returned to the University for teaching.

• Rolling and returning the prayer mats to the storage room and stacking them neatly.

• Returning the partition boards to their designated position behind the bleach rail and leaving the Great Hall ready for the porters.

Skills and experience

Students undertaking this role are expected to be punctual, reliable, courteous and calm.

They must not touch anyone, argue with or respond rudely to students or staff. 

If someone refuses to follow the arrangements or become difficult, the Support Team should not attempt to deal with the situation through confrontation. The person’s Student ID number should be recorded where the appropriate and the matter reported to the relevant person in charge.

This is a practical support role and does not involve religious leadership responsibilities.
