Description
Role
The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) is a neuroscience research centre with twelve research groups working across eleven laboratories. The laboratories are supported by specialist facilities and equipment that enable a wide range of scientific research.
The Laboratory Management Team is responsible for supporting the safe, clean and efficient running of the laboratories. Led by the Laboratory Operations Manager, the team works closely with researchers and other support teams to ensure that the laboratories are well maintained, organised and supplied with the equipment and materials they need.
Duties and responsibilities
The role will provide day-to-day support to the Laboratory Operations Team, helping to keep the laboratories clean, safe, organised and well supplied.
Main duties will include:
- Laboratory glassware washing: Collect, wash and return clean glassware to the SWC laboratories.
- Autoclave: Operate the autoclave to safely clean and sterilise glassware, fabrics and other laboratory supplies.
- Laundry: Collect, wash and restock lab coats, scrubs, hairnets and surgical gowns.
- Stock: Check supplies of laboratory and surgical items and personal protective equipment (PPE), and replenish these from SWC Stores when needed.
- Waste: Collect and replace laboratory waste bags and bins, and safely decontaminate biohazardous waste.
- Cleaning: Clean the floors in the perfusion room and regularly clean the specialist clean-room mats used in the laboratories.
General support:
- Carry out other routine laboratory support and cleaning duties as required.
The role will work under the direction of the Laboratory Operations Team and will receive appropriate training for all duties.
Skills and experience
- Previous experience in a laboratory, cleaning, facilities, healthcare or similar environment would be useful but is not essential.
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely, including following cleaning and safety procedures.
- Good attention to detail and a tidy, organised approach to work.
- Ability to work independently when carrying out routine tasks, while knowing when to ask for help.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
- Reliable and able to complete regular tasks to a consistent standard.
- Comfortable carrying out physical, practical tasks, including lifting and moving items such as bags of waste, laundry and boxes of supplies.
- Willingness to learn how to use laboratory equipment and follow the required procedures.
