Role

The Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) is seeking an undergraduate student to help create a documentary-style tribute to the late Professor Nigel Curry. Through interviews with friends and former colleagues, the film will explore their memories of Nigel and his influence on their lives and work.Working with Professor Paul Courtney, the student will be the lead technical producer, filming the interviews and editing the finished documentary. Paul will conduct the interviews, provide context and narrate the final film. Together, Paul and the student will shape the story, select material and agree the sequencing.This is an opportunity to contribute creatively to a meaningful film while developing practical documentary production and editing experience.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Co-plan the film, interview shoots and edit sequence with Paul Courtney.
  • Set up and operate cameras, microphones and lighting; film interviews.
  • Monitor picture and sound; organise footage and maintain secure backups.
  • Edit interviews with agreed archive material and supporting footage.
  • Record and mix Paul's narration; add titles, credits and checked captions.
  • Share rough cuts, incorporate feedback and deliver the agreed final film.
  • Follow agreed consent, permissions and safe-working arrangements.

Skills and experience

Essential: 

Current undergraduate student with practical camera, interview sound-recording and video-editing skills (e.g. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro). Able to set up equipment, organise files, work independently on technical tasks and meet agreed deadlines. A thoughtful visual storyteller who listens, welcomes feedback and treats contributors and personal memories with care. Available for agreed filming sessions and editing work during the assignment.

Desirable: 

Experience of documentary or interview-based work, lighting, audio clean-up, colour correction, captioning or using archive material. Coursework and personal projects are welcome.

Additional information

Applicants must be current undergraduate students, ideally studying film production, television, media production or a related subject. Students from other courses with suitable practical skills are also welcome.

Shortlisting should assess evidence of filming, sound recording and video editing, alongside a sensitive approach to the subject and the ability to work collaboratively and reliably. Coursework and personal projects are acceptable evidence; professional production experience is not required.
