Description
Role
The Student Social Media Assistant will support the promotion of the Computer Science department by creating engaging, student-led social media content for our school social media channels, including Instagram and LinkedIn. The role focuses on content creation and idea generation, whilst maintaining a relationship with the School’s Marketing Team and Social Media Coordinator. You will be required to create one piece of content a month, until July 2027.

Working Hours: Ad-hoc – To be arranged directly by the hiring manager
Pay Rate: £12.71 per hour
Holiday Pay Rate: £1.53 per hour
Location: UoN School of Computer Science
Duties and responsibilities
- Create engaging and relevant social media content (e.g. images, short videos, captions, stories, and ideas) for the Computer Science social media channels
- Capture student life, events, teaching, and extracurricular activities within the school
- Draft clear and concise captions, hashtags, and content suggestions for different platforms
- Ensure all content is accurate, inclusive, and appropriate for a university audience
- Meet agreed deadlines for content submission to support marketing schedules and campaigns
- Attend relevant meetings (as required) to gather information, ideas, and priorities for upcoming content
- Build positive working relationships with committee members, staff, and student representatives
- Proactively suggest content ideas based on committee activity, student interests, and the academic calendar
- Assist with content planning by contributing ideas to content calendars
- Respond promptly and professionally to feedback and requests for changes
- Follow university and departmental branding, accessibility, and social media guidelines
- Understand data protection, consent, and safeguarding requirements when capturing content involving students or staff
Skills and experience
Essential
- Undergraduate or Postgraduate Taught Computer Science Student
- Strong interest in social media, digital content, and communications
- Good written communication skills with attention to tone and detail
- Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Confident communicating with staff and students in a professional manner
- Creative and enthusiastic approach to content creation
- Professional and reliable
- Able to work independently with appropriate guidance
- Collaborative and open to feedback
- Good time management and flexibility
Desirable
- Experience creating content for social media(personal, society, or academic channels acceptable)
- Basic photography or video editing skills (e.g. Canva, CapCut, Adobe, or similar tools)
- Understanding of different social media platforms and audiences
