We are an alternative provision based in Sherwood, Nottingham. We offer personalised education through face to face teaching, online learning and vocational opportunities. Each learner follows a flexible pathway shaped around their needs, interests and goals, with support to build confidence and engage in learning.
We are looking for a Maths and English Tutor to work with young people with social and emotional needs across two days each week. Teaching will usually be one to one or in small groups of no more than four learners. The main focus is developing essential Maths and English skills, including Key Skills, through lessons adapted to each learner’s starting point and pace.

Length of Assignment: Full Academic Hour
Working Hours:
Tuesday: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Wednesday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Term time only. We are open to a job share, with one tutor covering each day. Further hours may become available.
Pay Rate: £15
Location: Sherwood, Nottingham

Duties and responsibilities
- Deliver Maths and English tuition on site, aligned with the Functional Skills curriculum. Where appropriate, support learners working towards relevant NCFE or ASDAN programmes.
- Teach mainly one to one or with two learners, adapting sessions to each young person’s starting point and pace. Occasionally, sessions may involve a group of up to four.
- Help learners strengthen their core skills and build confidence in Maths and English through practical, achievable activities.
- Identify gaps in learning, set suitable next steps and recognise progress, including improvements in confidence and engagement.
- Adapt teaching to support young people with social and emotional needs, using a calm and encouraging approach.
- Keep brief records of work completed and learner progress, including evidence needed for relevant learning programmes.
- Work with the team to plan sessions. Support with accessing and using teaching resources will be provided, while the tutor will adapt activities to meet learners’ needs.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and help maintain a safe, supportive learning environment
Skills and experience
Applicants should have strong Maths and English skills and be able to explain concepts clearly at different levels. We are looking for someone who can build positive relationships with young people, adapt their teaching and work confidently with individuals and very small groups.
Experience in tutoring, teaching or supporting young people with additional needs would be desirable. Working towards a teaching qualification would be welcomed but is not essential.
An enhanced DBS is required for the role.
