Role

Research and Innovation Services is recruiting a part-time Research Support Officer intern to support a research culture project: "What Is Research Time? A qualitative project exploring how LJMU academics define, experience and use research time and what this reveals about research culture".
The project will use semi-structured interviews and validation focus groups and will produce an internal LJMU report and an accessible sector-facing report. The internship will provide practical experience across the lifecycle of an applied qualitative research project.
Duties and responsibilities
- The intern will support a focused literature and environmental scan;
- Maintain participant recruitment and sampling records; coordinate interviews and focus groups;
- Check and anonymise transcripts; maintain organised project files; and assist with initial qualitative coding and thematic summaries.
- They will help prepare validation focus groups and contribute to referencing, drafting and the visual presentation of the internal and external reports.
- The intern may observe or cofacilitate interviews and, following appropriate training and agreement, may conduct selected interviews using the approved topic guide.
- They must follow all agreed ethics or governance, consent, confidentiality, anonymisation, secure storage and data-handling procedures.
- Methodological decisions and final responsibility for the research outputs will remain with the project leads.
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Must be enrolled as a PhD student at LJMU.
Skills.Essential:
- An understanding of qualitative research principles gained through study, work or equivalent experience;
- Essential: ability to read, synthesise and summarise academic or professional material; strong organisation and attention to detail
- Essential: clear written and spoken communication
- ;Essential: confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
- ;Essential: sound judgement and commitment to confidentiality
- Essential: the ability to work independently while contributing constructively to a smallteam.
Experience.
- Essential: knowledge of higher education, research culture or academic workload
- Essential: experience of reference management, accessible report design or simple data visualisation.
- Desirable: Experience of interviews, focus groups or qualitative coding;
- Desirable: Experience using NVivo or another qualitative analysis tool; participant or event coordination; handling sensitive or identifiable information;
- Training and supervision will be provided.
