This internship will be based within Research and Innovation Services, working as part of LJMU's Impact and Engagement Team. The team supports researchers to increase the benefits of their work beyond academia and to demonstrate how research contributes to positive change.
The successful candidate will support the implementation of LJMU's new Policy Engagement Framework, which aims to strengthen connections between researchers and policymakers and increase the use of academic evidence in policy development. The role will involve helping to map existing policy engagement across the University, supporting the delivery and analysis of a researcher survey, maintaining relevant records and resources and assisting with the organisation and promotion of policy engagement activities.
This is an opportunity to gain practical experience in research impact, policy engagement, data collection, communications and project coordination within a university environment. This role is only available to those who are registered for a PhD at LJMU.
Duties and responsibilities
The purpose of the role is to provide research, administrative and project coordination support for the implementation of LJMU's Policy Engagement Framework. Working with the Impact Officer and the wider Impact and Engagement Team, the intern will help the University understand and strengthen its relationships with policymakers, support researchers to engage more effectively with policy.
Main duties will include:
- Analyse the results of LJMU's researcher policy engagement survey, identifying patterns in current activity, level of engagement with policy, confidence, barriers and development needs
- Produce clear summaries, reports, presentations and visual materials communicating survey findings and recommendations to different internal audiences
- Develop and maintain an institutional map of researchers' existing engagement with policymakers, public bodies, parliamentary committees, government departments, local authorities and relevant policy networks
- Undertake desk-based research to identify policymakers, policy organisations, networks, consultations, Areas of Research Interest and other opportunities relevant to LJMU researchers
- Produce targeted stakeholder maps and briefing information to help researchers identify and connect with appropriate policy audiences* Assist with the organisation of policy engagement meetings, workshops, training sessions and networking events, including scheduling, booking rooms, preparing agendas, recording actions and gathering feedback.
- Support communications promoting policy engagement opportunities, training, events and examples of effective practice across the University
- Contribute ideas to improve how LJMU coordinates, supports and records academic policy engagement* Handle information responsibly and comply with relevant University requirements relating to confidentiality, information governance and data protection* Undertake other appropriate duties that contribute to the implementation and evaluation of the Policy Engagement Framework, as agreed with the Impact Officer
The role is intended to provide structured professional development alongside the intern's doctoral studies. It will offer experience in policy research, research impact, stakeholder mapping, data analysis, event coordination, evaluation and professional communication.

- Currently enrolled on a PhD programme at LJMU in any discipline.

- Ability to analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative information, identify key themes and synthesise findings clearly and accurately.
- Experience of undertaking desk-based research using a range of reliable sources
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate research findings to non-specialist audiences through reports, briefings and presentations.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to coordinate meetings, events and activities and manage competing priorities.
- Excellent IT skills, including competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate and well-organised records.
- Ability to work independently, use initiative and seek guidance when appropriate.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate professionally with researchers, professional services colleagues and external stakeholders.• Ability to handle information responsibly and maintain confidentiality.
Desirable:
- An understanding of research impact, knowledge exchange or engagement beyond academia
- Knowledge of how research evidence can inform public policy and practice.
- Experience of stakeholder mapping or researching relevant organisations, networks and decision-makers.
- Experience of working with academics, policymakers, public bodies or community organisations.
