Role
Your role will be as a professional enabling staff to help with one or multiple activities of the TYCHE research project (Resilience in Crisis Management: Assessing AI Opportunities and Arising AI Ownership Risks, and Mitigations) funded by SPRITE+

Duties and responsibilities
You will work closely with the investigators of the TYCHE research project (Principal Investigator: Manuel Maarek, School of MACS, Heriot-Watt University; Co-Investigators: Katharina Burger, University College London, Ana Isabel Canhoto, University of Sussex, Victoria Smy, King's College London) on one or multiple of the following activities (expected period in brackets):

A1 Provide synthesis of AI sovereignty/ownership publications, assist in adapting scenarios based on these synthesis (October-November 2026).
A2 Assist in conducting interviews with stakeholders (November-December 2026).
A3 Support the development of decision-support scenario-based toolkit for AI resilience (December 2026-January 2027)
A4 Taking part in the organisation (January 2027) and running of the TYCHE workshops (expected to be hybrid events) in the London region or in Scotland (February 2027).

Skills and experience

  • To be considered for the role, you need to be a student or have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a discipline relevant to the project (computer science, infrastructure, social science, defence studies, crisis management).
  • Provide a CV and a cover letter stating your interests in the topics of the project and evidence of requisite skills. 
  • Indicate in the cover letter the A1-4 activities you would like to be considered for (any number of activity). 
  • You will be employed on a casual work basis by Heriot-Watt University. If you are already doing casual work for Heriot-Watt University, please indicate it in your cover letter as this might constrain the number of hours you would be eligible to do.
  • The work can be done remotely.

Additional information

Casual work contract with Heriot-Watt University £19.51/hour (Grade 6/26) with a maximum of 7 hours/week over 12 weeks (with 1-2 weeks gap between contracts). The duration will depend on the activities you will be involved in (typically 12 days over 3 months).
