Role

Telford Steam Railway is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Catering Supervisors to support the delivery of its hugely popular Polar Express experience during the 2026 festive season.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a hands-on supervisory role within a busy and welcoming catering operation, helping to create memorable experiences for thousands of visitors throughout the Christmas period.

Working across both our Café and Hot Food Outlet, you'll support the Catering Lead to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, maintain high customer service standards, and help keep team morale high during our busiest trading periods.

As a Catering Supervisor, you'll be an integral part of the catering team, leading by example and helping colleagues deliver an exceptional customer experience.

You'll work in a fast-paced environment serving families and visitors attending one of Shropshire's most magical Christmas attractions.

The Polar Express is one of Telford Steam Railway's flagship festive events, attracting around 1,000 visitors per day during the Christmas season.

The operation is energetic and fast-paced, with multiple train departures throughout the day and evening.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Deliver friendly, professional and welcoming customer service.
  • Support the day-to-day operation of the Café and Hot Food Outlet.
  • Serve food and drinks and operate tills when required.
  • Assist with basic food preparation and food service.
  • Monitor stock levels and ensure supplies are maintained throughout service.
  • Support the Catering Lead in coordinating catering operations during busy periods.
  • Help motivate and support team members, ensuring a positive and collaborative working environment.
  • Resolve minor operational issues and escalate concerns where appropriate.
  • Report any significant concerns or incidents to the Catering Lead or Commercial Director.
  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness, food safety and customer care are maintained at all times.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the role.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in catering, hospitality, retail or customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • A positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to remain calm and organised in a busy environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to support and encourage colleagues.

Desirable

  • Previous supervisory or team leader experience.
  • Experience working within seasonal attractions, events or visitor venues.
  • Experience managing stock levels and supporting operational activities.
  • Food hygiene qualification (training can be provided where required).

Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends, is essential.

Successful candidates will be required to attend:

Staff Induction & Training: Saturday 14 November 2026

Operational Training & Start Date: Friday 20 November 2026

The dress code is practical, comfortable and festive:

  • Plain clothing or dark trousers/jeans.
  • Comfortable footwear suitable for standing during shifts.
  • Warm clothing for outdoor areas as required.
  • Christmas jumpers are encouraged!

Aprons will be provided.
