Role

Telford Steam Railway is recruiting enthusiastic Catering Assistants to help deliver an unforgettable experience during the much-loved Polar Express season.

Whether serving hot drinks in the café or helping prepare tasty food in our busy hot food outlet, you'll play an important role in bringing Christmas to life for families visiting the railway.

The Polar Express is one of Telford Steam Railway's most popular events, attracting around 1,000 visitors per day during the festive season.

The operation is fast-paced and exciting, with teams working together to serve guests between train departures throughout the day and evening.

Training: Successful candidates will be required to attend:

  • Induction & Training: Saturday 14 November 2026
  • Further Training / Operational Start: Friday 20 November 2026

Duties and responsibilities

As a Catering Assistant, you'll support the catering team across our café and food outlets by:

  • Providing friendly and welcoming customer service.
  • Serving food and drinks to customers.
  • Operating tills and handling customer transactions.
  • Assisting with basic food preparation and service.
  • Helping to prepare hot food items during busy trading periods.
  • Maintaining stock levels and keeping service areas well-organised.
  • Ensuring catering areas remain clean, safe and presentable.
  • Working closely with supervisors and colleagues to deliver a fantastic visitor experience.
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties required to support event operations.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Friendly and approachable manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Reliable, punctual and professional attitude.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a busy environment.

Desirable

  • Previous catering, hospitality, retail or customer service experience.
  • Experience operating a till.
  • Food preparation experience.
  • Experience working at events or seasonal attractions.

No previous catering experience is required. Full training will be provided.

Additional information

November

  • Shifts available weekends only.
  • Event operations begin from late November following training.

December

  • Shifts available Wednesday to Sunday each week.
  • Event operates daily except Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Final working day: 23 December 2026.

Shift times will vary depending on the event schedule and rota requirements. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is essential.

What to Wear: The dress code is relaxed and practical. For example:

  • Plain top and jeans/trousers.
  • Comfortable footwear.
  • Warm outdoor clothing where required.
  • Festive spirit encouraged!

Aprons will be provided and Christmas jumpers are always welcome.
