Role
To act as a body model on the surface anatomy teaching stations. The aim of these stations is to allow 1st year medical students to identify the relevant surface anatomy / features of the abdomen and back on a real person.

Duties and responsibilities

What you need to wear

• Wear a loose-fitting top that can be easily removed or lifted, together with loose-fitting shorts or tracksuit bottoms and underwear including a sport bra for female models.

• Remove clothing as appropriate to expose the relevant regions of the body (see ROLE section above for details). You will not need to expose your buttocks or groin, and your genitals and breasts will not be touched in any session.

What the role involves

• To act as a model for demonstration of surface anatomy of the relevant regions of the body (see ROLE section above for details) to small groups of first-year medical students (approximately 2–3 students per group).

• To give consent for examination, and to follow student or tutor instructions to sit or lie on an examination couch and position yourself to allow appropriate exposure of the relevant regions of the body.

• To allow students, and tutors where needed, to identify relevant anatomical features of the relevant regions of the body by touch and by drawing on cling film temporarily placed over your skin. In some sessions, these features may also be correlated with plastic skeletons, printed anatomical sections or medical images.

• Trained tutors will be present throughout to supervise the sessions. Any queries can be directed to them.

Session format

• Daily working hours are 08:30–12:15 (AM session) and 13:45–17:00 (PM session).

• Both the AM and PM sessions include 4 x 40-minute surface anatomy teaching activities.

• There is an unpaid 1 hour 30 minute lunch break from 12:15–13:45. Tea, coffee and water are available in the Clinical Education Hub (The Beehive), but you will need to bring your own lunch or buy it from one of the food outlets outside the Clinical Education Hub.

• The surface anatomy teaching activity usually takes place in a separate room from specimen-based anatomy teaching. The other stations students rotate through teach other aspects of anatomy and often make use of preserved human tissue.

• At the start of each teaching activity, students will be briefed on the activity, reminded about professionalism, and asked to obtain your consent before examining, touching or drawing on you.

Skills and experience

No specific skills or experience are required but candidates are asked to read the full job description carefully to ensure they are comfortable with the activities required.

Professional expectations

• Prompt arrival and appropriate dress are essential for this role. Please check the Arrival and What you need to wear sections of the DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SECTION before attending.

• Before entering the Clinical Anatomy area for the first time (only), you will need to sign a declaration confirming that you will follow the local regulations. This is a legal requirement for entry, as this space has restricted access and is regulated by the Human Tissue Authority. You will be reminded of these regulations on each visit and are required to abide by them.

• Once you have entered the Clinical Anatomy area, you will need to remain in this space except in an emergency. Toilets are available within the area.

• During the teaching sessions, you must always follow the instructions of the tutors and be ready to respond to instructions or prompts from students.

• You may not be directly involved in every 40-minute session, but you will be required to remain quietly on the couch unless instructed otherwise by the tutor.

• You must behave professionally and appropriately with tutors and students. During the sessions, students are expected to treat you with the same respect and dignity they would show patients. Any behaviour you consider inappropriate or disrespectful should be reported immediately to one of the supervising tutors.

Mobile phones and other digital devices are not permitted in the Clinical Anatomy area. These, together with your clothing, can be stored in a secure changing room during the session
