Description

Role

Only for current MDX students

MDXSU is looking for a Data & Insight Assistant to join our team and help us make better use of data to understand and improve the student experience.

This is a new, paid student staff role working alongside the Data & Insight Senior Coordinator. You will support the collection, organisation and analysis of student data, helping to turn complex information into clear, meaningful insight.

The role is about more than just working with numbers. You will help us tell the story behind the data, identify trends and opportunities, and contribute to insight that can inform decisions and lead to positive action for Middlesex students.

This is an ideal opportunity for a student who is interested in data, analytics, business intelligence, dashboards or research, and wants to gain practical experience using data in a real organisation.

Duties and responsibilities
You will support the Data & Insight Senior Coordinator with a range of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Developing and improving MDXSU's data dashboards, including supporting the development of our Power BI engagement dashboard.
  • Collecting and organising student data, including supporting data collection activities at events and across the Students' Union.
  • Cleaning and preparing data to ensure it is accurate, consistent and ready for analysis.
  • Analysing data to identify meaningful trends, patterns, gaps and opportunities.
  • Support the responsible handling of student data, ensuring data is collected, stored and used in line with MDXSU’s data policies, GDPR requirements and relevant data protection principles.

Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who is curious, proactive and interested in using data to make a difference.

Essential:
  • Current Middlesex University student, enrolled during the 2026/27 academic year.
  • Some experience of working with data, whether through employment, university/personal projects, or other relevant experience.
  • A careful approach to handling data, particularly when working with student information and personal data.
  • An interest in using data to understand problems, answer questions and support decision-making.
Desirable:
  • Experience using Microsoft Power BI, Tableau or other data visualisation/Business Intelligence tools.
  • Experience creating dashboards, reports, visualisations or presentations using data.
  • An understanding of MDXSU, the Students' Union.
  • A proactive approach and willingness to take initiative.
  • A data-focused and analytical mindset, with an ability to spot patterns, trends or interesting findings.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a willingness to investigate when something doesn't look right.
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain data or technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.

Location
Hendon Campus

Benefits
This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience working with real-world data in a professional environment.
  • Develop practical skills in Power BI, data analysis, data visualisation and reporting.
  • Build experience of working with data to support organisational decision-making.
  • Develop your ability to communicate technical findings to a non-technical audience.
  • Gain an understanding of data governance, accuracy and responsible handling of student data.
  • Receive support and guidance from the Data & Insight Senior Coordinator.
  • Work alongside colleagues across MDXSU.
  • Build a portfolio of practical experience that can support your future career.
You don't need to be a data expert. We're looking for a student who is interested in data and willing to learn.
What matters most is that you are curious about data, enjoy solving problems, pay attention to detail and want to use information to help make a positive difference to students' lives.
