Description
Role
Only for current MDX students
The Merchandise Development Assistant is a new, paid student staff role at MDXSU and is a fantastic opportunity for a student interested in retail, marketing, branding or product development.
Working alongside the Data & Insight Senior Coordinator, you will take an active role in developing MDXSU's merchandise and helping shape what we sell to students and the wider university community.
You will have the opportunity to take ownership - from understanding what merchandise students want, to reviewing sales and purchasing data, researching new products, working with suppliers and supporting the development of future merchandise lines.
We're looking for a creative, curious and proactive student who is excited by the opportunity to take ownership of a project and make a visible impact on student experience.
Duties and responsibilities
You will support the development and management of MDXSU's merchandise, including but not limited to:
- Helping to identify opportunities for new and improved products.
- Review and analyse merchandise sales data to identify popular products, purchasing patterns, seasonal trends and opportunities for growth.
- Research student preferences and demand to understand what students want to buy and why.
- Research potential new merchandise products and suppliers, considering quality, price, sustainability, brand alignment and student demand.
- Support and develop relationships with existing merchandise suppliers.
- Assist with the ordering and management of merchandise, including monitoring stock levels and identifying when products need to be reordered.
- Plan and support pop-up merchandise stalls and explore innovative new opportunities to promote and sell MDXSU merchandise throughout the academic year.
Skills and experience
Essential:
- Current Middlesex University student, enrolled during the 2026/27 academic year.
- An interest in retail, marketing, branding, product development or commercial strategy.
- Ability to work independently, manage your time and meet deadlines.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- A willingness to take initiative.
Desirable:
- Experience working in retail, customer service, marketing, events or a similar environment.
- Familiarity with analysing sales or other data.
- Experience communicating with suppliers, businesses or external organisations.
- Creative thinking and an interest in developing new product ideas.
Location
Hendon Campus
Benefits
- Gain hands-on commercial and retail experience with real responsibility and outcomes.
- Develop transferable skills in research, data analysis, product development, supplier engagement and presenting recommendations.
- Gain practical experience of how merchandise is researched, sourced, ordered, marketed and sold.
- Work directly with suppliers and stakeholders and gain experience of managing professional relationships.
- Your work will directly contribute to the development of MDXSU's merchandise, meaning you will see the impact of your ideas throughout the academic year.
You don't need previous experience in merchandise or retail to apply. We're looking for someone who is curious, organised and willing to learn, with an interest in understanding what students want and turning those insights into great products.
If you're someone who sees an MDXSU product and thinks "I wonder if students would actually buy this?" - this could be the role for you.
