The Faith & Culture Assistant role is a student staff position within the Student Opportunities Team, designed to support and facilitate faith and culture activity including recognising days of significance and celebration and conduct research into the lived experiences of students of faith.
 
The role will support our work to build communities that support and represent our student diversity at MDX. Your work will be both student-facing (supporting events, campaigns, and engagement opportunities) and behind the scenes (helping with planning, research, logistics, and communications). This is a hands-on role where you will gain valuable skills in community organising, research, campaigning, and administration. The role is varied and you will need to adapt to changing weekly priorities – with some weeks more focused on event delivery, some on research and others on planning and coordination.
 
As Faith and Culture Assistant, you will be directly shaping the experiences of MDX students. You will act as an ambassador of the SU, empowering students to raise issues, contributing to a more connected student community and ultimately leading change.
 
Aims of the role:
  • Increase meaningful representation of underrepresented student communities.
  • Support the Student Opportunities Team to deliver inclusive events, campaigns and initiatives that encourage belonging and participation to student faith and culture groups.
  • Lead the delivery of the student faith and culture events calendar and bring communities together.
  • Create channels to amplify student voice, share decision-making power and campaign for positive change both on and off campus.
  • Conduct research activities in relation to the experiences of students from different faiths and cultures in line with the Access and Participation Plan.
  • Co-design interventions to improve the student experience for Muslim students in response to the awarding and continuation gap.

Duties and responsibilities
You will be expected to:

  • Facilitate student leaders to organise and execute large scale events including awareness months and faith/culture celebrations.
  • Increase engagement and participation from students of different faiths and cultures.
  • Increase the number of faith and culture societies at Middlesex and their membership.
  • Lead the delivery of the student faith and culture events calendar.
  • Support students experiencing any issues and signpost to University and external services.
  • Gather and share student feedback to inform activity, and contribute to impact and evaluation reporting.
  • Ensure all activity is compliant with MDXSU policies and processes including but not limited to health and safety and safeguarding.
  • Conduct research on the awarding, progression and continuation gaps, focused initially on the experiences of Muslim students at Middlesex.
  • Work with the Student Partnership Board to co-create interventions to improve the awarding, progression and continuation gaps for Muslim students.

Skills and experience

Essential:
 
  • Current Middlesex University student, enrolled in the 2026–27 academic year 
  • Knowledge or lived experience of issues affecting liberation communities
  • Strong interest in liberation, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Commitment to equal opportunities and representing a diverse student body.
  • Passionate about improving the experiences of students in liberation groups.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, organised, and able to balance work with academic commitments.
  • Proactive and solution focused.
  • Creativity and enthusiasm for improving student engagement.
