Role

University College Birmingham is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Sport Therapy Pitch to support UCB sporting fixtures throughout the academic year.

This is an exciting Alumni Role, providing an opportunity to support the development of current Sport Therapy students while helping to ensure UCB sports teams receive safe and appropriate pitch/courtside support.

You will work closely with the Sport Development Officer and Sport Therapy staff to supervise student volunteers and placements during home fixtures, helping students develop valuable practical experience in a live sporting environment.

The role will involve approximately 2.5 hours per fixture, with a requirement to work a variety of fixtures and times throughout the academic year.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide pitch/courtside support for UCB sports teams, including first aid, taping and strapping, and basic injury evaluation.
  • Work closely with the Sport Development Officer and Sport Therapy staff to ensure Sport Therapy students complete their required supervised hours at UCB Sport home fixtures.
  • Supervise Sport Therapy student volunteers and placements, ensuring first aid and Sport Therapy support is delivered safely and appropriately.
  • Support students in developing their practical skills and confidence within a sporting environment.
  • Assist student volunteers when liaising with sports team committees and coaching staff.
  • Signpost students with injuries to the appropriate Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Clinic where required.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records for supervised fixtures.
  • Provide regular feedback following supervised matches.
  • Attend relevant CPD and training sessions where applicable.
  • Work flexibly across a variety of fixture times during the academic year.
  • Adhere to University College Birmingham policies, procedures and values.
  • Promote a safe, professional and supportive environment for both students and athletes.

Skills and experience

  • A passion for sport, physical activity and supporting the development of future Sport Therapy professionals.
  • Understanding or experience of working within team sports is desirable but not essential.
  • Previous experience providing sports therapy, first aid or pitch/courtside support.
  • Experience of supervising, mentoring or supporting students would be advantageous.
  • Ability to work confidently within a sporting environment and respond appropriately to injuries and situations that may arise during fixtures.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with students, coaches, team committees and University staff.
  • Strong organisational and administration skills.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and support student development.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
  • A professional and responsible approach to safeguarding, first aid and sports therapy practice.
  • Adaptability and the ability to respond appropriately to changing circumstances during sporting fixtures.

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree in Sport Therapy or a related subject – desirable.
  • Current First Aid qualification.
  • SST (Society of Sports Therapists) accreditation – desirable/where applicable.
  • Appropriate professional indemnity/practice insurance.
  • Appropriate DBS clearance.
  • Any additional relevant sports therapy, first aid or pitch-side qualifications would be advantageous.
