Duties and responsibilities

The Full Stack Shopify Developer sits at the intersection of marketing technology and automation. The primary purpose of this role is to build a middleware system that allows our marketing team to manage and enrich our Shopify store using natural language commands via ChatGPT.

By bridging AI tools with our e-commerce backend, this role empowers the Marketing department to execute product launches, update metadata, enrich B2B customer records, and alter site navigation without requiring manual data entry or technical developer intervention for routine tasks.

Department Context: Marketing

The Marketing team drives customer acquisition, brand presence, dynamic site content, and commercial growth. Modern marketing relies heavily on structured data, such as tags, meta fields, SEO descriptions, and targeted B2B company profiles, to power search performance, personalised campaigns and automated customer journeys. Being embedded directly within the marketing team, you will build technical solutions tailored directly to marketing workflows, helping turn manual marketing tasks into automated, AI-assisted operations.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Middleware Architecture: Build, test, and host an authenticated server bridge exposing OpenAPI endpoints to ChatGPT while communicating with the Shopify GraphQL Admin API.

Catalog & Content Automation: Create endpoints that allow natural language commands to create, update, or archive products,as well as modify titles, descriptions, vendors, tags, SKUs, barcodes, and navigation menus.

Third-Party Data Enrichment: Build external API connections (such as Companies House) to fetch business intelligence data and write it directly to Shopify B2B company and customer metafields for targeted marketing segmentation.

Custom Data Orchestration: Programmatically manage Shopify Metafields and Metaobjects to support dynamic landing page content and structured product attributes. Workflow Automation: Expose endpoints that allow ChatGPT to trigger pre-configured Shopify Flow backend actions and update select theme resources. Documentation & Support: Write clear OpenAPI documentation and create simple system prompts to guide marketing staff on how to interact with the ChatGPT integration safely.

Skills and experience

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

  • Programming Core: Solid foundational knowledge of server-side programming using Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript) or Python.
  • Web & API Concepts: Understanding of RESTful architecture, HTTP requests, JSON structure, and basic API authentication methods.
  • Problem-Solving & Logic: Strong algorithmic logic to map incoming text instructions to structured database queries.
  • Data Handling: Basic knowledge of working with structured data formats and using external APIs.

Desirable:

  • Exposure to GraphQL queries and mutations.
  • Familiarity with Shopify Admin or general e-commerce platforms.
  • Interest in OpenAI Function Calling, Custom Actions, or Large Language Models (LLMs).
