Role

Are you creative, enthusiastic, and organised, with an interest in zines, publishing, libraries, archives, community arts, or creative practice? Library, Careers and Skills (LCS) is looking for a Student Zine Editor to help shape, develop, and promote one of the University’s most distinctive collections.

Established in 2022, the Zine Maker Space created a dedicated environment where students, staff, and visitors could explore, create, and share zines. Since then, the collection has grown to over 1,000 catalogued zines, showcasing independent publishing, creative expression, and diverse voices from local, national, and international communities.

As part of the Library’s new Creative Space, we want students to be at the heart of the collection’s future.

Duties and responsibilities

As Student Zine Editor, you will play an important role in:

  • Developing and shaping the collection
  • Encouraging student contributions
  • Identifying new and emerging zine creators
  • Promoting engagement with zine culture across the University

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in collection development, curation, cataloguing, and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Collection Development

  • Research zine makers, small presses, and distributors to identify potential new acquisitions
  • Explore titles, themes, and creators that will appeal to current and prospective students
  • Encourage and facilitate donations of student-created zines to strengthen student representation within the collection
  • Attend zine fairs, festivals, and creative events, where appropriate, to discover emerging creators and trends
  • Support the acquisitions process, including tracking orders and maintaining records of potential purchases

Engagement & Promotion

  • Work with LCS colleagues to raise awareness of the zine collection
  • Create engaging content for social media, blogs, displays, newsletters, and other promotional channels
  • Develop and deliver ideas for events and themed showcases highlighting the collection
  • Support outreach activities with student groups, societies, academic departments, and creative communities
  • Gather feedback from users to help shape future collection development and event programming

Cataloguing & Collection Management

  • Catalogue new zines in line with Library guidelines and established procedures
  • Create descriptive metadata, summaries, keywords, and subject information to improve the discoverability of zines through Library Search

Skills and experience

This role would suit a student who is:

  • Creative, enthusiastic, and organised
  • Interested in zines, independent publishing, libraries, archives, community arts, or creative practice
  • Curious about emerging creative voices and publishing trends
  • Keen to develop practical experience in curation, collection development, cataloguing, and engagement
  • Confident in sharing ideas and working collaboratively with others

Start date: 12 - 10 - 2026

End date: 28 - 05 - 2027

The role is is 3 hours per week, expected to run for 26 weeks from October 2026 to May 2027 during term time only. It is a total of 78 hours total across the contract. The successful candidate will not be expected to work during Winter and Spring breaks.
