Description

Role
As a Student Social connector, you will play a key role in supporting students who may feel isolated or disconnected by creating opportunities for social interaction and fostering a sense of community on campus. Seeking out those who are struggling with university life and integration.

Your responsibilities will include using the Middlesex Unibuddy Community platform to connect with students and help make connections between students with similar interests, organising pop-up events and activities to encourage participation, and promoting existing social, wellbeing, and sports services and activities for engagement.
You will act as a friendly peer support buddy, helping students feel welcomed and included, and work closely with the Sports and Recreation service, Students' Union, and Wellbeing Services, to create and enhance student-focused initiatives.
Additionally, you will be expected to come up with new ideas for peer-to-peer support and contribute to making the campus a more inclusive and engaging place for all students.

Duties and responsibilities
Principal Duties:

  • Encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities, workshops, and campus events through a combination of digital channels (social media, providing information for email newsletters, and other channels) and distributing promotional materials in high-traffic areas on campus. Posting and monitoring the Unibuddy platform. Working with the student success and support and sport and Active campus team on their Mind Body Boost intervention programme, and adding social outreach element in collaboration with the 100 day welcome calendar of campus activities.
  • Act as a point of contact for students seeking opportunities to get involved in student organisations or initiatives.
  • Regular meeting up with specific students who have been identified as benefitting from the Social Connectors Programme. Help these students navigate challenges by directing them to appropriate services and support and campus social activities.
  • Assist in the planning, organisation, and execution of events aimed at enhancing student life.
  • Gather feedback from students to ensure events are tailored to their interests and needs. Where appropriate research what works well at other universities in encouraging campus community and social connection amongst students.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of the Sport & Recreation offer and activities, and all Middlesex services so you can effectively support and advise students.
  • Help students navigate challenges by directing them to appropriate services and support.
  • Participate in meetings or focus groups to improve campus engagement strategies.
  • Regularly meet with fellow connectors and the Peer Support and Wellbeing teams at Middlesex to help support each other, think innovatively about how the scheme is going and how it might be improved, and to feedback how their cases are proceeding.
  • Promote an inclusive environment by ensuring all engagement efforts consider diverse student needs and backgrounds.
  • Support cultural awareness initiatives and collaborate with student groups to celebrate diversity on campus.
  • At all times demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, respect, confidentiality in your work and to feel comfortable and confident working with potentially vulnerable students.
