This role will involve the day-to-day running of the Sport Building and providing the safe and efficient operation to all users. Successful applicants should have experience within a sport, exercise and fitness environment. 
 
You will have excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to customer care and experience led services. The work will include setting up activity areas, working with our Reception, Wellbeing& Engagement Coordinators and casual student facility staff and community leaders, providing basic maintenance and cleaning duties, to support Cleaning & Maintenance staff from our Campus Support Teams. 
 
The appointed individual will be up to date with all developments in the field and relevant fitness industry qualifications and NGB coaching awards are desirable.
 
Enthusiasm and motivational skills are necessary, and the ability to relate well to students, colleagues, clubs and community users are essential. The successful candidate will work as part of the team being responsible for the operations of the Sports Facilities with specific responsibility for project work and lead role in specific areas of interest as part of a developmental CPD outlook.

Duties and responsibilities
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

 
  • Support the daily operation of the Sport Building and delivery of sports programmes, providing excellent customer service at all times.
  • Ensure sports equipment is set up safely and on time, in line with health and safety requirements, and oversee the issue, collection and storage of equipment.
  • Maintain awareness of bookings, staffing levels, equipment requests and maintenance issues to ensure the smooth running of facilities during each shift.
  • Lead the reporting, monitoring and resolution of facility maintenance issues through the Estates reporting system.
  • Provide reception cover when required, handling membership and booking enquiries, monitoring facility use, maintaining records and resolving routine issues.
  • Hold, or obtain within three months, a First Aid qualification and undertake responsibilities as a First Aider, Fire Warden and Evacuation Chair operator, responding to emergencies and completing associated documentation.
  • Carry out and monitor daily cleaning standards to ensure facilities, changing rooms, toilets and activity spaces are safe, clean and well presented.
  • Coordinate staffing resources, including overtime and temporary staff, ensuring appropriate cover and qualifications are in place for all scheduled activities.
  • Lead and supervise casual staff, coaches and instructors while on duty.
  • Work closely with University colleagues, JMSU and external partners to support teaching, events, fixtures and operational requirements.
  • Contribute to marketing activity, content creation and promotion of services through approved communication channels and social media platforms.
  • Manage customer feedback and complaints, responding promptly and professionally in line with organisational values.
  • Act as an ambassador for LJMU, supporting recruitment activities and providing information about University and JMSU services.
  • Monitor and review operational procedures, risk assessments, NOPs and EAPs, undertaking audits and incident investigations, including RIDDOR reporting where required.
  • Support communication and collaboration across Sport Building teams and service areas.
  • Lead on designated areas of responsibility, which may include finance, recruitment, staff development, event management, participation, healthy lifestyles, sports development or external partnerships, and deputise for the Head of Sport & Physical Activity when required.
  • Ensure building security, safeguarding, contractor management and compliance with data protection requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, audits, impact assessments and service development activities.
  • Maintain mandatory qualifications, CPD and compliance with all health and safety policies, procedures and legislation.

  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and contribute to externally funded projects when required.

Skills and experience

Essential Factors

  • HNC or HND in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification, or proven track record of broad substantial relevant experience demonstrating general knowledge of technical or professional practice.
  • Customer service and people centred delivery experience
  • Experience of working in physical activity, wellbeing, sport, exercise, fitness, health or associated environment.
  • Knowledge of issues and systems relating to health and safety in sport and/or associated sectors.
  • The post requires significant physical activity in terms of lifting, carrying, setting up and taking down sports equipment. Applicant needs to be physically fit to complete the role.
  • Experience of facility support in terms of cleaning and maintenance within a customer facing facility.
  • Experience of working effectively within a team with supervisory or lead staff member experience.
  • Experience on bespoke IT systems and associated Microsoft platforms
  • Ability to collaborate with customers from a range of backgrounds
  • Able to work across a range of hours throughout the week including early mornings, late evenings and weekends
  • Have a basic knowledge & understanding of health & safety, including Fire evacuations, COSHH, Manual Handling, & Risk Assessments.
  • The ability to work responsibly on their own initiative as well as being able to contribute to a team Project and/or event management experience
  • Monitoring, measuring & report writing experience

Desirable Factors

  • Postgraduate degree in a related subject area
  • First Aid Qualification
  • Familiarity with University Sport programmes.
  • Experience of working in a leisure environment preferably dealing with a broad range of activities
  • A current sports coaching certificate
