Role
We are seeking a motivated and capable Technician to join our technical team supporting laboratory teaching and project activity. This is a practical technical role working across a multidisciplinary laboratory environment, with a particular requirement for strong Chemical Sciences knowledge and laboratory skills.
The post will be based within the Cockcroft laboratories on the University's Peel Park campus. Cockcroft is a major teaching hub supporting practical activity across Chemical, Environmental and Life Sciences, with shared and specialist laboratory spaces supporting taught practicals, project and dissertation work. The technical team works collaboratively across these areas to support activity from undergraduate through to postgraduate level.
For this vacancy, we are particularly looking for someone with a strong practical grounding in Chemical Sciences. You will need experience of working in chemical laboratory environments and a good understanding of organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry, alongside a strong understanding of chemical safety, handling, labelling and storage. You should also be confident in the preparation of reagents and solutions and the application of COSHH and other laboratory safety requirements.
Working as part of the wider Faculty technical team, you will primarily support the preparation of taught practical activities, planning and preparing assigned laboratory activities and organising your workload to ensure they are ready to the required standard. This may include preparing chemicals, reagents, solutions and samples, setting up equipment and ensuring the appropriate technical requirements are in place.
You will work closely with Senior Technicians to understand wider technical requirements and priorities, while taking responsibility for delivering your allocated activities. You will use your knowledge and experience to resolve routine technical issues and escalate issues where appropriate.
You will also support project-based laboratory activity. This may include providing technical support to laboratory users, operating laboratory equipment and carrying out technical or analytical activities within your area of knowledge and experience.
As part of the wider technical service, you will work collaboratively with colleagues across different areas, sharing skills and supporting activities in line with service needs. Your Chemical Sciences knowledge and skills may be applied across different areas of teaching and project activity, as well as contributing to research infrastructure, laboratory and inventory management and wider service improvement activities.
This means you may also support practical activities outside your main area of work. Some teaching involves live animals, animal-derived materials and preserved or deceased specimens, including fish and small mammals. You will need to be comfortable handling these materials appropriat
