Role
The Library’s Learning and Skills Team is looking for University of Salford postgraduate students from any discipline to join us as Writing Facilitators to run regular peer-writing cafés (in person and online) for Salford students. We’re looking for motivated students who can create a supportive, welcoming environment in which students are able to write and complete their work or chat about their writing difficulties with others, as well as guiding the sessions and discussions with appropriate awareness of student needs.
You would be expected to work 3 hours per week for an initial 6-week period between 9th October 2026 and 27th November 2026, with a possibility to extend for a further 12 weeks in trimester 2 (January – April 2027). You will need to be available for 6 hours of mandatory paid training on campus on the 7th October.

Duties and responsibilities
- Facilitate regular in-person and online group writing café sessions and collaborative writing activities
- Create a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students
- Support students in identifying their writing challenges and making progress with their writing goals
- Reflect on the effectiveness of writing café activities and contribute ideas for improvement
- Help analyse and understand current student needs
- Promote the writing cafés to improve awareness, attendance, and engagement
- Signpost students to other services available at the university as required
Skills and experience
Essential Skills and Experiences
- Strong command of written academic English
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to ask questions and facilitate discussion
- Ability to facilitate group sessions in a supportive and organised way
- Ability to self-reflect about your own process of writing and its challenges
- Ability to listen actively and respond to student needs
- Awareness of the potential barriers students might face in writing (e.g. affective, cognitive, cultural, socioeconomic)
- Ability to work well in a team
- A genuine desire to help students develop as writers
- Experience with digital tools and willingness to learn new tools to support writing
- Previous facilitating or peer-mentoring experience
- An interest in inclusive pedagogy, accessibility, neurodiversity, and supporting diverse learners
- Familiarity with the debates around the use of GenAI in academic writing
