Role

The Library’s Learning and Skills Team is looking for University of Salford postgraduate researchers from any discipline to join us as Writing Mentors to help run a new academic writing course for Salford students. We’re looking for motivated mentors who understand the different challenges of writing at university level and can help support the delivery of the provision, particularly by offering feedback on students’ written work (in written and oral formats), assisting with online session delivery, and helping identify student needs. There might also be scope for having input on the teaching design and iterative improvements to the course.

We will provide training and scaffolded supervision, whilst giving you opportunities to shape the service with us. You will also be able to develop your pedagogical skills and enhance your knowledge of inclusive practice and service innovation.

You would be expected to work 4 hours per week for an initial 6-week period between 12th October 2026 and 20th November 2026, with a possibility to extend for a further 12 weeks in Trimester 2 (January – April 2027). You will also need to be available for 6 hours of mandatory paid training on Wednesday 7th October.

Duties and responsibilities

• Provide constructive written and verbal feedback on students’ writing to support their development as independent writers
• Support students in identifying the nature of their writing challenges and developing their own strategies to overcome them
• Help deliver online or hybrid sessions by supporting the course lead
• Review the newly developed materials and resources
• Help analyse and understand current student needs
• Share best practices in inclusive writing support

Skills and experience

Essential Skills and Experience

• Strong command of written academic English and ability to write in different forms (e.g. essay, reflective piece, report)
• Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to deliver clear, concise, actionable, and supportive feedback
• Ability to self-reflect about your own process of writing and its challenges
• Ability to listen actively and respond to student needs
• Awareness of the potential barriers students might face in writing (e.g. affective, cognitive, cultural, socioeconomic)
• Ability to work well in a team
• Ability to analyse, synthesise, and present information clearly
• A genuine desire to help students develop as writers
• Confidence with digital tools and willingness to learn new tools to support writing and online delivery
