Role
Provide dedicated support, advice and guidance to students accessing UniCares and Student Safeguarding services, while coordinating casework and administrative processes across the University.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Act as a coordinating point of contact for students registered with the UniCares service, including care-experienced, young unpaid adult carers, young independent estranged students and forced migrants.
  • Provide information, advice and guidance via email, face-to-face meetings, and online platforms, ensuring students can access a holistic range of opportunities, support, and services at any point during the student lifecycle.
  • Provide confidential, empathetic, and non-judgmental pastoral support to students accessing UniCares or Student Safeguarding services.
  • Act as an advocate for the needs of students with safeguarding concerns and UniCares students across the University.
  • Plan, organise and prioritise a range of administrative processes across Student Support Services, prioritising Safeguarding and UniCares case administration.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records and case management systems.
  • Ensure information on all support offered is regularly updated and easily accessible.
  • Identify and engage students eligible for the UniCares support programme.
  • Work closely with the UniCares Adviser, Senior UniCares Adviser, Senior Student Safeguarding Adviser and Student Safeguarding Manager to review student casework and make referrals, where appropriate.
  • Communicate clearly, confidently, and sensitively with students, staff, and external partners, using appropriate written and verbal communication styles for safeguarding and wellbeing contexts.
  • Work closely with colleagues from the Student Experience, including Student Health and Wellbeing, and Careers and Employability directorates, to manage cases, make appropriate referrals, and deliver cross-institutional support to students.
  • Work closely with School Wellbeing and Course Officers to provide joined-up support packages for students, including providing letters of support for students' extenuating circumstances applications.
  • Work closely with the Development and Alumni Relations Office regarding funding and specific scholarship awards.
  • Act as a key source of specialist knowledge in supporting UniCares students, supporting the Senior UniCares Adviser to provide specialist training and ongoing support to staff and students.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in line with GDPR.

Skills and experience

  • Experience working within safeguarding and/or healthcare environments, including understanding of confidentiality, data security, and information governance
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of young people in or leaving care, estranged students, young unpaid adult carers, young independent estranged students and forced migrants such as refugees and asylum seekers
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) at intermediate level, and familiarity with digital tools, platforms, or Assistive Technology
  • Awareness of the UK Higher Education environment and student support services, or experience administering processes in an educational institution
  • Good working knowledge of administrative systems and processes, including secure handling of confidential or sensitive information (e.g., safeguarding data)
  • Experience using initiative to resolve routine and non-standard queries, knowing when to escalate sensitive or complex issues (e.g., safeguarding)
  • Experience of Safeguarding and Case Management
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance in a pastoral capacity
  • Ability to deal sensitively with a wide range of queries, adapting communication and approach to individual needs and ensuring an inclusive, positive experience
  • Experience of monitoring delivery and outcomes and evaluating work with a focus on the specific impacts of activity
  • Experience of providing support to students in Higher Education environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clearly, professionally, and appropriately for different audiences, including vulnerable students or staff members
  • Ability to empathise with young people in or leaving care, estranged students, young unpaid adult carers, young independent estranged students and forced migrants such as refugees and asylum seekers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including diplomacy, sensitivity and discretion that can be applied to a range of audiences from students to senior staff, including in challenging circumstances
