The Laboratory Technician Internship is a structured and fully supervised placement within **BioGrad Biobank**, providing a student with practical experience of working within a professional and regulated laboratory environment.
The purpose of the internship is to complement the student's university studies by giving them practical insight into the day-to day operation of a biobank laboratory, including biological sample traceability, laboratory documentation, sample preparation and storage, quality processes and good laboratory practice.
Working alongside experienced scientists and laboratory personnel, the intern will have the opportunity to observe biological sample-processing workflows and support the team with a range of defined, low-risk laboratory activities appropriate to their level of training and experience.
Duties and responsibilities
Key activities may include:
- Preparing laboratory processing packs, controlled documentation, labels, tubes, racks and consumables.
- Supporting defined, non-critical sample-handling and sample-processing activities under appropriate supervision.
- Assisting with sample labelling, organisation and traceability.
- Supporting the preparation and maintenance of laboratory records, processing forms, manifests and chain-of-custody documentation.
- Assisting with the recording of sample information and storage locations within approved laboratory systems.
- Supporting sample receipt, storage and reconciliation activities.
- Observing sample retrieval, processing and dispatch preparation where appropriate.
- Assisting with routine laboratory organisation, cleaning and decontamination.
- Supporting stock checks, stock rotation and replenishment of laboratory consumables.
- Developing an understanding of laboratory quality systems, data integrity, confidentiality, health and safety, contamination control and professional laboratory practice.
- Working collaboratively with scientists and other members of the laboratory team and participating in relevant training and team activities.
Skills and experience
This internship is suitable for a Level 5 or Level 6 undergraduate student studying a relevant scientific degree. Previous professional laboratory employment is not required, as appropriate induction, training and supervision will be provided throughout the placement.
- Attention to detail – able to work carefully and accurately when following laboratory procedures, completing documentation, labelling samples and recording information.
- Ability to follow instructions and procedures– able to follow written and verbal instructions and work within defined processes, training and supervision.
- Organisation and reliability – able to work methodically, manage structured or repetitive tasks, meet agreed expectations and maintain accurate records.
- Communication and teamwork – able to communicate clearly, work collaboratively with scientists and other laboratory colleagues, ask questions when unsure and respond positively to feedback.
- Professionalism and confidentiality – understands the importance of confidentiality, health and safety, hygiene, data integrity and professional conduct when working within a laboratory environment.
- Willingness to learn – enthusiastic about developing practical laboratory skills and gaining experience of biobanking, biological sample processing, sample traceability and regulated laboratory working.
