Description

Role
Medical students are required to demonstrate their clinical examination skills before meeting real patients or in the absence of real patients and so the Leicester Medical School is looking for reliable individuals to work on a casual basis as ‘Subjects of Clinical Examinations’ (SOCEs) for medical teaching and practical exams. Teaching will take place on weekdays, between working hours. 

 
Medical students will only be performing basic skills such as taking a blood pressure or examining a part of the body; no procedures involving needles, etc. will be carried out. SOCEs are not required to act out a particular symptom or complaint and will instead be examined as patient subject, rather than a patient simulator.  
 
Please note: University regulations stipulate that current undergraduate students of the University of Leicester should work no more than 20 hours per week during term time however it is Leicester Medical Schools recommendation that Medical students do not exceed 10 hours during term time. There are no restrictions outside of term time. 
 
Working hours: Weekdays (Monday to Friday, typically excluding Wednesdays), between working hours of 8am – 6pm. Availability on all or any of the above days will be required., Shifts are approximately 3.5-4 hours in length.
 
Induction Session: Successful candidates will be required to attend an induction session on Wednesday 21st October from 2-3pm.

Duties and responsibilities
SOCE’s are required to be examined as patients to allow medical students to perform basic skills such as taking a blood pressure or examining upper or lower part of the body. It is important that medical students demonstrate their practical skills on people rather than models.

 
The SOCE’s must be prepared to be examined on different parts of their anatomy and this will include the neck, arms, shoulders, chest, legs, knees and feet.
 
The examinations do not involve nudity but there are specific clothing requirements. SOCE’s will need to wear shorts on occasions and loose-fitting clothing for the examinations to occur. Where SOCE’s are female, it is recommended they wear a sports bra as on occasions the chest/abdomen needs to be examined on with the removal of the top half of clothing. Examinations will occur standing, sitting of lying down on a medical couch.
 
An examiner will be present at all times whilst a SOCE is being examined by a medical student.
