Description

Role

University College Birmingham is looking to recruit a Residential Community Mentor at The Maltings to join their friendly and enthusiastic Residential Community Team.

The role requires primarily on-site work with a few office-based jobs to assist the Residential Community Team with the day-to-day running of the site.

Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant must be able to complete physical work such as lifting moderately heavy items and walking up and down lots of stairs. Remedial cleaning duties will also be needed at times to assist our cleaning team.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Perform essential maintenance tasks, including resetting tripped electrics, replacing lightbulbs, and preventing or responding to leaks and floods.
  • Conduct kitchen inspections in occupied flats to ensure hygiene and safety standards are maintained.
  • Professionally respond to student queries via phone, face-to-face interactions, and through our Unibuddy Community platform.
  • Carry out essential administrative duties, including issuing visitor passes, managing parcel deliveries, and completing daily lock-up procedures.
  • Set up rooms and spaces to the standards outlined by management for events or operational needs.
  • Provide informative and welcoming tours of the site to staff, students, and visitors when required.
  • Support stock control processes by monitoring and reporting inventory levels.
  • Collaborate with the Residential Community team to conduct annual fire evacuations and perform routine inspections of fire safety equipment, including evacuation chairs and refuge phones.
  • Assist the cleaning team with essential tasks, including the removal of perishable items from kitchens and clearing rubbish during intake periods and throughout the summer.
  • Safely handle master keys and individual room keys in accordance with site security protocols.
  • Conduct daily site patrols at The Maltings, reporting any issues or concerns to management promptly.
  • Log maintenance requests accurately using the Help Desk system.
  • Support the planning, organisation, and delivery of events, including the preparation of materials and resources.
  • Create and share engaging social media content that promotes the residential community, student events, and experiences, aligning with the University’s standards and values.
  • Serve as a designated house mentor, offering consistent support to residents throughout their stay in accommodation. Responsibilities include addressing resident queries (such as maintenance concerns), facilitating the reporting of antisocial behaviour, and supporting the coordination and delivery of student meetings relating to kitchen hygiene disputes.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the post, as required by management.

Skills and experience

Full training will be provided; however, we are seeking a safety-conscious and enthusiastic individual who is confident in using their own initiative. You should be proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently when carrying out daily tasks. The ideal candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrate a genuine eagerness to learn about the University and its various departments, with the aim of enriching students' overall experience.
