Description

Role
Unitemps are looking for recent graduates to help new students feel at home at Salford. Starting university is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. As a Student Welcome Guide, you will play an important role in helping new students settle into life at the University of Salford. Through friendly conversations, regular in-person events and online engagement events (lunchtime and evening), you will help students find the information, support and confidence they need to thrive. You won't be expected to have all the answers, your role is to listen, share your experiences and help students connect with the right people, services and opportunities across the university during those early weeks of learning. We are particularly interested in hearing from friendly and approachable students who enjoy helping others, listen well and can offer encouragement during the transition to university life. Successful Student Welcome Guides will be reliable, professional and inclusive, able to communicate confidently both online and in person while helping new students connect with the right information services and support across the University of Salford.

We particularly welcome graduates from the following disciplines:

- Nursing and Midwifery

- Allied and Public Health

- Policing, Psychology, counselling and social work

- Life sciences, including sports, biosciences and chemical sciences.

Duties and responsibilities
Duties include:

• Welcome new students and help them feel part of the Salford community and to achieve this by helping create an inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions.

 • Help students navigate their first 6-weeks at university and to share your experiences of university life and offer peer-to-peer encouragement.

• Have an excellent understanding of university services and to help students understand who to contact for different types of support.

• Direct students to university services and resources when needed. This will include directing students in accessing information about academic, wellbeing, financial, careers and campus services.

• Organise and run a series of campus orientation activities to boost new students' confidence in campus wayfinding (i.e. campus treasure hunt/guided walk/map cocreation)

 • Work collaboratively with programme teams, the onboarding team and the SPA team to guide students to getting off to a smooth start and obtaining extra support where needed.

• Host a combination of online and in-person information events. We are particularly interested in events being hosted at times when students may struggle to obtain guidance (e.g. Live Q&A and/or Teams chat events and/or podcasts early in the evening). • Host computer cluster-based events that support new students to navigate the online learning environment, the student hub and other programme relevant materials.

• Work collaboratively with the student’s union, School Officer and Lead Student Representatives to plan social events that tackle student loneliness. Examples of helping students may include

• Contact their Academic Advisor or Programme Leader with course-related questions. • Access Wellbeing, Counselling services or Disability and Inclusion services.

• Use library and study skills resources.

• Connect with Students' Union activities, societies, and volunteering opportunities.
