Role
Unitemps are recruiting for Qualitative Interviewers within the Social Research Institute. The role is to work the date of Monday 7th September 2026 and will run until Friday 30th November part time at 11 hours per week . Payment is set at £20.92 + holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.
The Generation New Era Stories pilot project seeks to develop and evaluate best practice in qualitative interviewing methods for research with parents of young children. The pilot study is being undertaken in preparation for a longitudinal qualitative study embedded within the new UK birth cohort study, Generation New Era (GNE)
The overall aim is to identify effective ways of generating rich qualitative data from a diverse sample of parents and carers that can be integrated with quantitative data, providing a comprehensive understanding of children's early lives in the UK. The research focuses on capturing parents' perspectives and experiences of raising a young child, including how parenthood is imagined, understood and practised within the varied circumstances of family life.
By documenting the lived experiences and perspectives of those who care for young children, the project aims to deepen understanding of children's social and emotional wellbeing and development during the early years.
The pilot study will develop and test recruitment materials and strategies and compare different approaches and modes of qualitative interviewing. We aim to identify methods that are both inclusive of a wide range of participants and capable of generating rich and relevant data to address the project's research objectives.
The study aims to recruit 20 families with an infant and to interview parents both individually and in dyads, using a combination of online and in-person methods.
Duties and responsibilities
- Supporting recruitment for the pilot sample through correspondence and telephone contact with potential participants who have expressed an interest in taking part in the study
- Conducting qualitative interviews with parents and carers of young children, both online and in person.
- Writing reflexive notes following each interview
- Contributing to analytical discussions and evaluation meetings with members of the research team regarding interview findings and fieldwork experiences
Please note that this role requires travel to various locations across the UK to conduct interviews and may involve overnight stays. As children will be present during interviews, applicants must obtain or hold a Basic DBS check (we can support with this).
Full training will be provided. Successful candidates must be available to attend:
- An in-person training session at UCL on Monday 7th September
- An online training session on Wednesday 9th September
Working hours will vary across the two-month project period, depending on participant recruitment and interview scheduling.
The postholder will work under the supervision of Professor Katherine Twamley (Principal Investigator, Thomas Coram Research Unit, UCL), alongside Dr Michelle Sleed (Co-Investigator, Anna Freud Centre) and collaborate with Dr Xuerui Hu (Research Fellow at UCL). The role will be based within the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Social Research Institute, UCL, and will contribute to the project Generation New Era Stories: Pilot Study.
Skills and experience
- Experience conducting qualitative interviews.
- An undergraduate degree in a social science discipline.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport with participants from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage interview scheduling and administrative tasks.
- Ability to write clear and reflective field notes following interviews.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a collaborative research team.
- Willingness and ability to travel within the UK, including occasional overnight stays.
- Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality, safeguarding, and ethical research practice
