This role will provide an excellent opportunity for a recent DMU graduate to understand more about the Higher Education outreach sector in the UK and as well as the importance of widening participation to Universities.

The role is to work 37 hours per week, start date will be September 2026 until 31/08/2027.Application deadline is 16/08/2026 with interviews 27th/28th August - subject to change.

Duties and responsibilities

The role of Pathways Outreach Student Assistant is based within Pathways team which sits across the local universities, DMU, Loughborough and University if Leicester as part of the National UniConnect programme funded by the office for students. This role will provid an excellent opportunity for a current student on a degree programme which includes an industry placement at Leicester to understand more about the Higher Education outreach sector in the UK and as well as the importance of widening participation to universities.

This opportunity will provide the post-holder with a number of high level transferable skills, such as problem-solving and communication, experience liaising with staff and visitors from all backgrounds and levels, working on their own initiative, and organisation and planning skills. The post-holder will also gain some digital skills in terms of maintaining social media platforms (Pathways Twitter and Instagram accounts), websites such as Pathways to HE website and using databases.  

Training and support will be available to the post-holder, not only from internal sources and shared expertise, but also from external bodies and organisations such as UCAS and other network leaders like NEON. The roles will have regular one-to-ones to monitor progress and to identify any other training needs. The post-holder will gain significant experience in project management and delivery, by supporting existing and new projects including opportunities to put forward new business cases.

Role Purpose:

  • To assist with the development and delivery of key activities/interventions to support the Pathways (UniConnect) programme delivery across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
  • To assist with the implementation of the Pathways impartial advice and guidance programme with target groups of learners across the region
  • To work closely and effectively with the wider Pathways team to keep information and resources up to date on the Pathways website, reliable and relevant sources of information working closely across the Pathways partner insitutions.
  • To provide the student voice into the Pathways programme
  • To support the visibility of the Pathways programme across the region by maintaining the social media channels.
  • To assist with the data collection and inputting of Pathways activities in line with the evaluation plans set by the Pathways Evaluation and Operations Manager.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • A demonstrable belief and enthusiasm in the benefits of Higher Education, and the desire to enable students from a wide range of backgrounds to access a university education.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills and evidence of strong social media skills.
  • Must be able to work interactively with young people in a classroom and virtual environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills at all levels including the ability to engage with young people, parents, teachers, advisers as well as academic and support colleagues in the University.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Be self-motivated and proactive
  • Good numerical skills and an ability to read and analyse data to provide information for reports
  • Commitment to providing high standards of customer service.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with young people through participation in recruitment, outreach or community work.
  • Experience of event planning and delivery
  • An understanding of widening participation issues and barriers for students entering Higher Education.
  • Experience of maintaining social media
