Role
Demonstrators will undertake teaching support and administrative duties in relation to identified areas of Geology teaching delivery to support the highest quality service to students.
Duties and responsibilities
Supporting the learning of undergraduate geology students in face to face delivery of practical classes. Please specify which module(s) you wish to apply for in your application:
GL1103 Palaeobiology and the Stratigraphic Record. 1 demonstrator, 27 hours on campus (9 x 3 hour practicals). Module convenor is Tom Harvey.
GL1107 From Core to Crust. 34 hours on campus (4 hours a week), normally split between 2 demonstrators (17 hours each). Module convenor is Marc Reichow.
GL2103 Magmatic & Metamorphic Processes. Up to 32 hours on campus (6 hours a week but demonstrator unlikely to be needed for all hours), normally split between 2 demonstrators (16 hours each). Module convenor is Marc Reichow
GL2106 Mineral Resources for Net Zero Carbon. Up to 34 hours on campus (up to 4 hours a week). Module convenor is Gawen Jenkin
GL2107 Major Events in the History of Life. Up to 8 hours on campus to assist with YouTube assessment preparation. Module convenor is Jens Zinke.
GL3100 Field based project (3rd years). 4 hours support for Illustrator training. Training is delivered in induction week. Module convenor is Sarah Daives.
GL3100 Field-based project (2nd years). 1 demonstrator for 6 hours on Interpreting Geological Maps. Module convenor is Sarah Davies
GL3102 Environmental Geoscience. Up to 18 hours on campus (2 hours a week), but unlikely to be needed for all sessions). Module convenor is Dan Smith.
Please note that if face to face practical classes are cancelled, the demonstrating roles may cease with immediate effect unless there is a requirement to support online delivery.
Skills and experience
Applicants should have successfully completed at least the first year of the relevant degree programme (or equivalent) and have practical experience applying the skills and techniques associated with the subject area. You will be an effective communicator with strong analytical abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and the confidence to work both independently and as part of a team. A good standard of English is essential to support teaching and administrative activities, and to communicate effectively with staff and students.
The successful candidate will understand the importance of health and safety within laboratory or fieldwork environments where applicable and will demonstrate behaviours aligned with the University's values of being inclusive, inspiring and impactful.
Previous experience of demonstrating or teaching undergraduate students would be advantageous, as would a relevant First Aid qualification. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to develop their teaching experience while supporting students in a positive and engaging learning environment.
