Role

This is a 12-week paid internship opportunity as part of the WMG Internship Programme.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated software engineer to join a forward-thinking manufacturing business working on multiple vision projects – accurate measurement and/or object recognition through computer vision.

You will work alongside the data and software engineering team within the R&D department to aid the development of these systems.

The project will deliver real business impact, providing you with the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge while gaining valuable hands-on experience within a well-established manufacturing business.

This internship is designed to provide meaningful responsibility from day one, with the opportunity to present recommendations directly to senior stakeholders and contribute to strategic improvement initiatives.

Successful interns may also be considered for future permanent opportunities within the business.

Duties and responsibilities

Example Project Activities

Depending on business priorities, projects may include:

  • Creating an accurate measurement / object recognition system through computer vision.

- This should be generalizable and provide an interface to other applications we may use.

  • Benchmarking different vision hardware.

- Whilst we do have a list of hardware we’d like to try, we’re open to different techniques using all kinds of vision.

- This should include a small exploration phase where our assumptions are challenged.

  • Ensuring production-grade standard and reliability of the vision system.

-This should be measured using a repeatable set of tests.

-We’d like to produce a datasheet that’s of similar quality to already existing camera systems.

  • Monitoring project performance against agreed KPIs.
  • Presenting findings and recommendations to management.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for graduates who are naturally curious, proactive and enthusiastic about creating systems from scratch

You should enjoy software development, machine learning and understanding how software and hardware integrate.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable communicating with people across the business and confident taking ownership of their own tasks.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Degree (or predicted degree) in: Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering with software, Software Engineering
  • Must have experience working with version control like git and GitHub.
  • Must have experience working with common document editing tools e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Should have experience working in Linux (and Windows).
  • Must have good understanding and should have working experience with computer vision techniques and vision hardware control.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • A proactive and positive approach to learning.

Desirable

  • Experience or knowledge of any of the following would be advantageous:
  • Very good if you have experience with electronics and hardware.
  • Very good if you worked on database design and usage.
  • Very good if you have a working knowledge of database system architecture and web backends.
  • Good if you have experience interrogating and visualising toolkits e.g. SQL, BI software (Power BI, Grafana, Tableau).
  • Good if you have good understanding of cloud serverless compute.
  • Good if you worked with Docker, podman or similar.
  • Good if you worked with devcontainers.
  • Good if you worked with large cloud compute and storage providers.
  • We use Azure but Oracle and AWS are good as well though.
  • Good if you worked with computer networks.
