Role
****** Ringfenced to LJMU students ONLY ******

The Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team is a small and successful team, supporting the institution in achieving a first class award in the People and Planet league in 2025.  The Team is working across the institution and leading on numerous implementation plans to improve performance in carbon, waste, biodiversity, sustainable travel and communications and engagement.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with our small, focused and highly driven team to help engage new and returning students in sustainability at LJMU and educate them on sustainable behaviours on campus. It will provide valuable sustainability and events experience.

Duties and responsibilities

Fresher’s fair is one of the biggest events in the academic year for sustainability communications and engagement. For the past two years the team’s stand has proved extremely popular with over 400 students interacting with staff during the event. It is therefore a key opportunity to provide behavioural education, let students know about sustainability work being carried out, and to encourage students to join activities throughout the year.

The team host two games at the stand, with a member of staff required for each. The first is the ‘How Bad are Bananas’ game which provokes thought and discussion around the carbon impact of everyday activities and items. The other is a waste game which teaches players how to recycle on campus. The team provide high quality, durable and enticing prizes for anyone playing the games, however these are not provided for those who have not taken part.

  • The stand requires one person to play each game and other staff to host the stand in between, providing prizes to those who have played.
  • Those on the stand may also provide information on the teams work and the upcoming sustainability events and activities that students can get involved in.

The role will require attendance at a one-hour training session, held on campus from 10am – 11am on Wednesday 16th September; and a four-hour session from either 10am – 2pm OR  1pm – 5pm at Fresher’s Fair, hosted at Liverpool Experience Campus, on Friday 18th September.

Individuals will need to make their own travel arrangements to get to Liverpool Experience Campus for the fair.

When applying, please state which session you are available for on Friday 18th September.

Skills and experience

  • To play the games, individuals must be motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Fresher’s fair is a high energy environment, and we often receive queues so individuals must be able to remain calm and positive under pressure.
  • A high-level understanding of carbon emissions from day-to-day activities and items, as well as good waste management practices would be beneficial.
  • An enthusiasm for sustainability, good communication skills and the confidence to engage with students is essential.

When applying, please state which session you are available for on Friday 18th September(10am – 2pm or 1pm – 5pm).
