Role
This is a 12-week paid internship opportunity as part of the WMG Internship Programme.
This role involves developing a proof of concept Engineering COâ‚‚e Assessment that enables engineers to estimate the carbon impact of material choices, manufacturing processes and logistics routes during the early stages of product design. The successful candidate will research carbon emissions data, develop a structured assessment methodology, and create a proof of concept that supports evidence-based sustainability decisions throughout the engineering design process.
This internship will benefit your sustainability, engineering analysis, data management, research, problem-solving, technical communication and project management skills.
The internship is based at the company site in [Birmingham] and you will be working closely with the [Artifex Interior Systems Limited] team, gaining first-hand experience in an innovative engineering business. As part of the Programme, you will also benefit from weekly supervision and support from a WMG expert throughout the duration of the project.

The intern will be responsible for:
- Researching existing carbon emissions (COâ‚‚e) assessment methodologies, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles and available emissions datasets.
- Engaging with engineering stakeholders to understand project requirements and sustainability objectives.
- Defining the scope, assumptions and functional requirements for the proof of concept Engineering COâ‚‚e Assessment.
- Collecting, analysing and organising material-level carbon emissions data, including both virgin and recycled materials.
- Developing a structured database of manufacturing process emission factors.
- Investigating logistics and transportation emissions data and assessing its suitability for inclusion within the assessment.
- Developing a proof of concept Engineering COâ‚‚e Assessment that enables comparison of material choices, manufacturing processes and logistics options.
- Creating user-friendly methods for inputting engineering data and comparing alternative design concepts.
- Testing the assessment using representative engineering case studies.
- Validating calculations and identifying opportunities for refinement and improvement.
- Gathering stakeholder feedback and incorporating recommendations into the final assessment.
- Producing clear technical documentation and user guidance to support future use and development.
- Presenting project findings, recommendations and opportunities for future development to the client.
- Supporting the company's wider sustainability, carbon reduction and engineering innovation objectives.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Sustainable Engineering, Materials Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Data Science or a related discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with technical datasets and analysing complex information.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and data analysis techniques.
- Ability to research, interpret and present technical information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good organisational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with engineering stakeholders.
Desirable
- Knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), carbon accounting or sustainability assessment methodologies.
- Understanding of engineering materials and manufacturing processes.
- Experience using Python, VBA or similar programming languages to automate calculations or analyse data.
- Experience developing engineering calculations, decision-support methodologies or analytical models.
- Awareness of sustainability and circular economy principles within product development.
- Interest in sustainable engineering and low-carbon product design.
