Description

Role

We are looking for a Facilities Assistant to join the Campus Cleaning Services (Residences) team within the Estates Department. We are looking for a candidate who can provide efficient, customer focused facilities service within student accommodation, carrying out minor maintenance, periodic compliance checks and other general duties.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Carry out minor non-skilled repairs, maintenance of equipment and report damage or defects requiring skilled repair. This may include, but is not limited to, unblocking toilets and sinks, replacement of shower fittings, resetting refrigerators, Salto battery replacements, changing lights.
  2. Chaperoning maintenance contractors as required.
  3. Cleaning and maintaining to a required standard building entrance areas, windows, stairways, walls, ceilings, light diffusers and various public areas as required. This will include using and maintaining industrial and standard floor care equipment.
  4. To carry out periodically, compliance checks which includes but not limited to, taps/ shower head/hose descaling/fire checks/water flushing (Legionella).
  5. Load/unload and distribute clean/dirty linen and towels as requested.
  6. Driving all types of University fleet vehicles, to transport furniture, materials and staff.
  7. Carrying out daily inspection checks and ensuring cleanliness of Estates Facilities fleet vehicles, ensuring appropriate records are maintained in line with the University Transport Policy.
  8. Receive and be an authorised signatory for deliveries of stores and equipment and to distribute to designated areas as directed.
  9. Removal of refuse to the appropriately designated waste corral.
  10. Use and maintain industrial floor equipment.
  11. Moving furniture and equipment using appropriate means that comply with health and safety legislation and manual handling techniques.
  12. Utilise IT/iPad devices to access University systems for data recording and auditing activities.
  13. To cover in other areas of campus due to business needs or absences.
  14. To undertake from time to time such other duties as may be requested which are
  15. consistent with the nature and grade of the role.
  16. To undertake training/refresher training as required.
  17. To be able to follow reasonable instructions from line managers.

This list is not exhaustive and will be reviewed periodically when adjustments may be made.

This role is 36.5 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 and you may be asked to work at the weekend.  The usual hours are Mon to Thurs 09:00-17:00, Fri 09.00-16.00. 

A full UK driving license is essential for this role, as you will driving all types of University fleet vehicles, to transport furniture, materials and staff.

Skills and experience

  • Educated to GCSE level, NVQ Level 1/2 or equivalent experience.
  • Full UK or EU equivalent driving licence (with category D1 entitlement for driving minibuses preferred), held for at least 2 years with no serious driving convictions.
  • Excellent customer service skills with experience of working in a customer service environment, including the ability to tactfully deal with any customer complaints or issues. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work on own initiative and make appropriate decisions, with experience of working without supervision, to tight timescales and deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to act on both written and verbal instructions
  • Good team worker
  • The ability to use appropriate handling equipment and tools along with the ability to lift and carry items such as mail bags and furniture, whilst complying with manual handling best practice. 
  • IT literate with knowledge of how to use Ms Outlook, Ipad/tablet for recording and auditing purposes

Uniform: Tops only will be provided.  Utility Trousers and Safety boots are recommended if available, but are not essential.
