About the role:

This is a 12-week internship opportunity with Space Studio Graphics Ltd as part of the WMG internship program.

This role involves supporting Space Studio Graphics Ltd, an established company who specialise in large format graphics and printing for the exhibition and event sector. This internship will be supporting the development of a new and innovative framework to fit large fabric graphic panels and lighting to an existing shell scheme. This opportunity will allow you to utilise and improve on your 3D CAD and product development skills, along with providing excellent knowledge and experience within design and engineering development in industry.

The internship is based at the company site in Berkswell, and you will be working closely with the Space Studio team, gaining first-hand experience in a design and installation business. As part of the program, you will also benefit from weekly supervision and support by a WMG expert, throughout the duration of the project.

About the company:

Space Studio Graphics (SSG) work alongside ESSA (Events Supplier and Services Association) Ltd, under the umbrella of Creative Live Ltd. Together they design and install full exhibition systems for event shows, which include shell schemes, printed graphics and modular lighting.

Space Studio design and print graphics in house on both hard and fabric substrates. The fabric panels are mounted onto a proprietary shell scheme using tension mounting within the outer frame.

The company works with clients across various sectors ranging from first time exhibitors to multi-national event organisers. They are focused on evolving traditional practices within their industry and want to explore innovative solutions for future business development.

Duties and responsibilities

The project will focus on collaboration with the team at Space Studios, to improve the functionality, manufacturability and usability of their recently prototyped product. Main activities will include:

  1. Review current exhibition shell system products and installation methods
  2. Produce 3D CAD model of a current frame prototype design and the larger shell system
  3. Exploration of design concepts – ranging from refinements of the current prototype, to new innovative methods
  4. 3D print any mechanisms or sections of framing, to support concept review and test fit with the larger shell system
  5. Refine chosen design to suit chosen manufacture method inc. 3D CAD simulation to assess safety
  6. Contact manufacturers for production quotations and feedback
  7. Refine design based on manufacture feedback if necessary

Skills and experience

ESSENTIAL:

  • Educated to degree level in Mechanical/Design Engineering or similar
  • An understanding and appreciation of metal and polymer extrusions
  • Proficient in using SolidWorks for creation of parts and assemblies
  • Direct experience with product design and development from conceptual or physical product
  • Good verbal and written communication, time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively
  • Self-motivated, driven, proactive with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate new ideas quickly and effectively, through 3D CAD or 2D illustrations

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience with SolidWorks Visualize/Composer or any 3D rendering package
  • Experience converting physical parts into 3D CAD models
  • Experience of product/industrial design with consideration to usability
  • Knowledge of various manufacturing techniques for metal work and plastics
  • Experience of additive manufacture
  • Full UK driving licence could be beneficial
