Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Part Time Scientific Illustrator. This role is for UCL Students and UCL Graduates Only.This role has a start date of August 3rd and a projected end date of December 31st 2026. This is a part-time role at 10 hours per week (projected). Payment is set at £19.14 per hour + £3.58 holiday pay. This role is UCL hybrid working; remote with an occasional in person meetings at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre when required.
 
The Neuroinformatics Unit (NIU) is a research software engineering team, building easy to use, open-source tools for neuroscience and machine learning. The NIU also lead the development of the BrainGlobe Initiative. BrainGlobe exists to create software for computational neuroanatomy, helping thousands of researchers around the world process, analyse, visualise and understand brain imaging data from different species.

Duties and responsibilities

We're looking for someone to help us to better explain what our tools do and how they work. The goal is to turn complex scientific concepts into clear, attractive visuals that a scientific audience and the wider public can understand quickly.

The main duties will include:

  • Design clear schematics and explanatory diagrams illustrating how individual BrainGlobe tools work.
  • Create figures, schematics and diagrams for use within our website, documentation, tutorials, conference posters, talks and social media.
  • Develop and refine logos and icons for a consistent visual identity across the BrainGlobe ecosystem.
  • Work with BrainGlobe developers and scientists to translate technical concepts into accessible visuals.
  • Deliver assets in formats suitable for web, print and editing.
  • Attend occasional meetings (either virtually or in person).

Skills and experience

  • Significant experience using graphic design software
  • Experience creating visuals to communicate complex (ideally scientific) concepts
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and activities, working to deadlines and prioritising as appropriate
  • Knowledge of, or an interest in neuroscience or anatomy research

Location
UCL; hybrid working, remote working and occasional in person meetings at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre when required
