The Healthy Lifestyles Internship is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about promoting physical wellbeing and helping others lead healthier, more active lives. This role supports the ongoing development and delivery of LJMU Physical Wellbeing Team’s health and fitness programme, which plays a vital role in advancing the physical wellbeing of LJMU students, staff, alumni, and the wider community.

Through our Healthy Lifestyles programme, we aim to foster long-term physical wellbeing by making exercise accessible, enjoyable, and part of everyday life.
As an intern, you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality support across our facilities, ensuring users feel empowered, informed, and motivated. You will help individuals make positive lifestyle changes and support our mission to create a healthier university community.
You will also be supported in your professional development, with access to training and qualifications that will enhance your career prospects within the health and fitness industry.
Duties and responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in delivering gym inductions and educate members on proper technique, safe training, and the physical health benefits of regular exercise.
- Ensure the gym environment supports physical wellbeing through safe equipment use, daily upkeep, and encouraging positive habits.
- Maintain the upkeep and functionality of Matrix fitness equipment, educating members on safe and effective use, and building a positive working relationship with the Matrix account manager to support servicing, updates, and equipment performance.
- Provide an active and approachable presence on the gym floor—particularly in strength and conditioning areas—guiding and supporting users with their physical wellbeing routines.
- Support the creation of a welcoming atmosphere that encourages long-term participation and embeds physical activity into daily life.
- Run a variety of gym-based fitness classes that cater to different ability levels, designed to promote cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and overall wellbeing.
- Follow cleaning and maintenance procedures to ensure a safe and hygienic workout environment.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of personalised fitness programmes aimed at improving members’ physical health and lifestyle outcomes.
- Support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of the Healthy Lifestyles Programme, including coordinating sessions, engaging participants, promoting key wellbeing themes (physical activity, nutrition, and behaviour change), and monitoring outcomes to improve programme effectiveness.
- Support the delivery of inclusive programmes for external visitors and partner organisations (e.g. Mencap through the Yes We See You project, ACE, and others), providing a welcoming environment, assisting session delivery, and contributing to the growth and development of the organisation’s external engagement and wellbeing offer.
Skills and experience
- A Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification
- A genuine passion for promoting physical activity and wellbeing
- Confidence in assisting and engaging with gym users in a friendly, professional manner
- A willingness to undertake further training to enhance your contribution and skills
- Strong communication skills, including listening, feedback, and building rapport
- The ability to motivate and inspire individuals on their physical wellbeing journey
- Team-oriented approach with a collaborative spirit
- Awareness of health & safety in fitness environments and a commitment to upholding standards
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required
