The University of Leicester is seeking a friendly, efficient and proactive Sports Assistant Lifeguard to join the Sport & Active Life team at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre on a casual basis. This role is primarily focused on lifeguard duties, supporting the safe and effective operation of the University’s wet-side facilities. The position is available from July 2026 for an initial six-month period, with potential for extension, and offers flexible working hours dependent on the needs of the Sports Centre.
Working as part of a small and dedicated team, you will contribute to delivering a high-quality experience for all users of the Sports Centre. You will play a key role in ensuring that all visitors receive a welcoming and professional service while maintaining a safe, clean and inclusive environment in line with the University’s standards.

You will act as a first responder in emergencies, ensuring the highest standards of safety are consistently upheld, while also carrying out regular health and safety checks such as water testing, monitoring bather loads and recording essential operational data.
You will also support the day-to-day running of the Sports Centre by welcoming members, managing access, assisting with bookings through the online system and completing administrative tasks. Additional responsibilities include cleaning duties, opening and securing facilities, handling membership sales and payments, and reporting any maintenance or equipment issues promptly.
Skills and experience
Applicants must hold a valid National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), as this is an essential requirement for the position. A proactive approach, strong attention to detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key attributes for this role.
You will be IT literate, with experience using Microsoft Office programmes, and prepared to undertake an enhanced DBS check. A commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness and customer care is essential, along with the flexibility to work shifts as required by the Sports Centre.
