Description
Role
A Simulated Person (SP) is an individual trained to portray realistic characters in educational simulations. These sessions support students across a range of programmes including Nursing, Paramedic Science, Social Work, and Psychology.
SPs help learners develop communication, teamwork, decision making, and practical skills. They may also take part in assessments where students are evaluated on these abilities.
Scripts are created using the iRIS Simulation Authoring Platform, providing structure while allowing some flexibility through cue words. SPs replicate behaviours, emotions, and physical characteristics relevant to the scenario.
SPs also contribute to teaching and learning activities such as:
- Multidisciplinary large-scale simulations, Social Work visits
- Conducting interviews
- Counselling role plays
- Physical or mental health assessment scenarios
You will also be trained to provide constructive feedback to students, particularly on communication and interpersonal skills
Duties and responsibilities
- Complete all mandatory and refresher training
- Meet the demographic or case specific requirements for each scenario
- Manage your calendar, bookings, and availability
- Arrive punctually and prepared, including any required clothing changes or pre session briefings
- Learn and accurately portray patient/client cases based on the provided iRIS script
- Participate in briefing and debriefing sessions
- Provide feedback from the patient’s perspective on how the student made you feel
- Maintain confidentiality regarding learner performance
- Discuss student performance only with the lead academic
- Accept and act on feedback from the lead academic
- Report any concerns about learner behaviour or professionalism to the lead academic or SUCO promptly
- Demonstrate respect for all individuals regardless of beliefs, opinions, gender, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, age, or status
Skills and experience
- Enjoy working with people and supporting learners
- Empathy and sensitivity when engaging in scenarios
- Ability to follow instructions accurately
- Good memory and ability to learn role details
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong teamwork skills
- Reliability and punctuality
- Previous SP or acting experience is helpful but not essential
- Experience or understanding of simulation based education is beneficial but not essential
