Role
As a Student Engagement Officer, you will play a key role in supporting student engagement, attendance, and progression. You will work closely with academic teams and support services to monitor engagement data, follow up with students, and help ensure students are connected to the right support at the right time.
Duties and responsibilities
• Coordinating and assisting with School activities to support student engagement, progression and retention. Examples of these include: ensuring that the School implements the Student Engagement and Attendance Policy and support in ensuring student visa requirements are met.
• Accessing data sources (including the University’s attendance monitoring software, SEAtS and learning analytics sources) to support academic programme teams and to inform follow up and next steps with individual students.
• Producing reports for School and University management on student progression and engagement.
• Contracting and meeting with students to support them, signposting to specialist support services or escalating cases as necessary to staff within the School or located centrally.
• Coordinating liaison where needed between Academic Services teams and central student support services, e.g. Student Counselling, Mental Health & Accessibility Services, Student Support Services, Academic Skills Team.
Skills and experience
• First degree or equivalent (i.e. professional qualification or considerable relevant experience).
• Working knowledge and understanding of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation and confidentiality.
• Experience of working in a busy customer or student-focused office environment.
• Experience working with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
• Experience of working in higher education administration, student experience, student welfare or similar areas.
• Well-developed active listening, verbal and written communication skills that allow you to work effectively with students with empathy and tact.
• Ability to manage potentially challenging and complex student situations calmly and effectively, seeking support from specialist support services colleagues as necessary.
• The ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Confident in the use of IT systems, particularly the use of MS Office packages such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
• The ability to identify potential solutions for problems.
• The ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
• Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work to deadlines.
• Ability to compile and interpret statistical information using a spreadsheet.
