Description

Role

The UK Vegetable Genebank (UKVGB) conserves a globally significant collection of vegetable crop seed. The collection is managed to provide plant breeders and researchers with access to genetic diversity, vital for crop improvement for food security.

Access to high quality data on plant characteristics such as disease resistance helps plant breeders and researchers identify the most appropriate material to incorporate into their work. However, much data from historic research projects remains stored in excel files, making it difficult to access, and limiting its value.

We are looking for an intern to work with historic plant trait datasets and carry out data processing to clean, map and re-format data ready for uploading into the UKVGB database. Applicants should have a good existing level of skill using excel to handle data and be enthusiastic to learn more data handling techniques. Through this project the intern will develop practical skills and experience in data handling, as well as receiving training on data stewardship principles through the CaSDaR (Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research) network. The intern will be part of a CaSDaR training cohort, and will receive a weekly training session in data stewardship from the CaSDaR network during the project.

This project has received funding through the UKRI Digital Research Infrastructure Programme – via CaSDaR (The Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research Network+).

Duties and responsibilities

  • To carry out pre-processing of excel spreadsheets, including data cleaning, field mapping, variable recoding and re-formatting to prepare datasets for upload into the UKVGB database.
  • To write a report summarising the data resources available on pest and disease resistance in Brassica following the upload of relevant datasets.

Skills and experience

  • Must have completed the second year of a degree in a biological science, students from the University of Warwick will be preferred.
  • Experience using excel spreadsheets to handle data, including the ability to use and interpret formulas.
  • Attention to detail, essential for ensuring data re-formatting does not introduce errors into the dataset.
  • Ability to problem solve (e.g. finding errors in data)
  • Ability to work independently, while also knowing when to seek support
  • Enthusiasm for learning new data handling techniques and data stewardship principles.
