Role

An exciting opportunity exists to provide members of the School of Life Sciences with an appropriate range and quantity of high-quality media and solutions.  You will prepare and distribute tissue culture media, bacteriological media, sterile solutions and buffers for the school’s research and teaching communities and respond to requests for information about the specifications of media supplied.  In addition, you will undertake accurate administrative tasks and record keeping - including the recording of custom-made media requirements and recording daily media production via computer based programs.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties will include:

1) Preparation and distribution of tissue culture media, bacteriological media, sterile solutions and buffers for the School’s research and teaching communities. This involves balancing 2 main areas:

  •  Reacting immediately to urgent media requests to ensure the progression of experiments for research and teaching. This requires excellent standards of aseptic technique, quality control and good laboratory practice, whilst following health and safety procedures.
  • Longer term planning and anticipation of customer needs to ensure that the media shelves are fully and appropriately stocked, 

 

2) Responding to requests for information and assistance from students and academics about the specifications of media supplied, including details of concentrations, pH, sterilization techniques used etc                                                                                                                                                           

3) Following standard operating procedures and guidelines for the production of custom made media, which include chemical calculations when changes to a recipe are requested by customers.               

4) Undertaking accurate administrative tasks and record keeping - including the recording of custom made media requirements, recording daily media production via computer based programs, photocopying as and when needed and replacing consumable stocks from stores.                                

5) Ensuring equipment is kept in good working order. Calibration of, balances, and pH meters. Essential cleaning of benches ensuring a clean environment

Skills and experience

  • Experience in laboratory practices with respect to handling chemicals, safety in the workplace and lifting techniques.
  • Confident use of automated equipment, calibration and cleaning of same .i.e. autoclaves, balances, pH meters, plate pourers and pumps.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures and COSHH.
  • Confident aseptic technique
  • Excellent attention to detail and record keeping skills
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to focus on providing excellent customer service.
  • Good IT skills
  • A good knowledge of the significance of good sterilisation techniques for life sciences research.
