Role
You will join the British Academy-funded project Literacy, Inclusion and Risk: Exploring Teaching Assistant Roles in Supporting SEN Pupils Across Intervention and Whole-Class Contexts.

Led by Dr Katie Brown (Canterbury Christ Church University - School of Social Work, Education and Teacher Education) and Dr Megan Loveys (University of Roehampton - School of Education), this project explores the experiences of teaching assistants supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) across literacy interventions and whole-class teaching.
 
The successful applicant will provide practical support during the data collection phase of the project. The primary responsibilities will be supporting and/or leading the delivery of focus groups and producing accurate verbatim transcripts of focus group recordings.
This role would be particularly suitable for a current doctoral student, postgraduate researcher or early career researcher seeking experience of qualitative educational research.

Duties and responsibilities

• Support the organisation and delivery of focus groups with teaching assistants.
• Attend focus groups and support the research team during data collection.
• Produce accurate verbatim transcripts from audio-recorded focus groups.
• Ensure transcripts are completed to agreed deadlines and quality standards.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with ethical and data protection requirements.
• Organise and securely manage audio files and transcript documentation.
• Attend occasional project meetings as required.

Skills and experience

Essential Criteria
• Current postgraduate researcher, doctoral researcher, or recent graduate in Education, Childhood Studies, SEND, Psychology, Sociology, or a related discipline.
• Experience of qualitative research methods.
• Experience producing accurate qualitative transcripts.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Excellent written English.
Desirable Criteria
• Experience supporting focus groups or interviews.
• Knowledge of educational research, SEND, literacy, or inclusion.
• Experience working on a funded research project.

CCCU Canterbury

Benefits
This is a fixed-term position of approximately 300 hours, to be completed between July 2026 and December 2026.

Weekly working hours will vary according to project activity, with increased hours required during focus group delivery and transcription periods.
The role will be primarily remote, although attendance at focus groups may be required.
