THE ROLE

DMU Marketing and Communications Department are currently recruiting a Communications Officer to work full time, 37 hours per week. The role is of a hybrid nature; and 2 days are to be worked in the office at De Montfort University and 3 days to be worked remotely.

The Communications Officer plays a key role in creating compelling and informative content for these audiences. The role holder will support with delivering communications plans that forward the strategic objectives of the organisation, and empower our staff and students. The role involves working closely with decision makers and stakeholders across the university, creating content that aligns with organisational strategy. The post-holder will use internal platforms effectively, creating content that aligns with audience need and channel specifications.

Rate of pay: £16.62

Duties and responsibilities
Support the delivery of the universities strategic objectives by producing high-quality content across a variety of platforms and formats including intranet, content management systems, email, newsletters, social media, and face-to-face.

Contribute to the coordination of innovative and effective communications to key groups including staff and existing students, assessing their respective needs and partnering with stakeholders across the university.
Provide engagement support across all available communications channels (internal, social media, external) as required to meet the university’s strategic needs.
Take project management approaches to communications planning, considering university, directorate and team priorities, stakeholder engagement, available resources and realistic timescales.
Prioritise work effectively, taking into account strategic objectives, resource, and realistic timescales.
Use project management approaches to create and deliver communications plans.
Work collaboratively with staff across the Marketing and Communications directorate and the wider university to source, commission, and/or produce high-content including written, images, video, and social media.
Routinely and robustly challenge facts and figures, established convention and current university messaging to ensure all communications are up to date. This will include taking a ‘critical friend’ approach to all communications planning and university meetings.
Reflect the diverse and inclusive community in the staff and student communities at DMU in communications.
Be an ambassador for the directorate in all activities undertaken.
Recognise which issues need to be escalated to the Senior Communications Officers, Head of Engagement Communications or Deputy Director of Communications.
Promote and exhibit DMU values and be a role model for the university’s code of conduct.
Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably required from time to time.

Skills and experience

Content 

Extensive experience of producing high-quality content in a variety of formats for delivery across a variety of channels, including digital, social media, content management systems, intranet, email, newsletters, and face-to-face.

Understanding of internal and external audiences and innovative ways to engage with them.

Experience of creating and implementing effective communications plans.

Extensive experience of corporate copywriting such as speeches, brochure, web and social media content.

Extensive knowledge of social media including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Ability to routinely and robustly challenge facts and figures.

Ability to use metrics and reporting to continually review and improve communications

Stakeholder management    

Proven experience of working with key stakeholders to enhance and maintain excellent stakeholder relationships.

Pressured environment    

Experience in a pressure-driven environment in a complex organisation.    

Experience of managing multiple projects for multiple stakeholders simultaneously.

Attitude    

Positive and proactive attitude with a can-do approach to challenging targets.

Higher Education experience    

Experience working in HE or thorough understanding of the sector.

Expert liaison    

Experience of working with specialists (e.g. academics).
