Role

We are recruiting Student Ambassadors to support the Medical Schools Council to deliver an online summer school to young people in Year 11 and Year 12 who are interested in a career in medicine. The Summer School is targeted at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in England to encourage and support them to progress to higher education.

The summer school is funded by NHS England and is central to MSC’s widening participation work.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Student ambassadors will work in groups of two to support MSC and help to deliver sessions to summer school participants.
  • Support a group of students during each session, ensuring that participants engage with the activity or session and that the group project is completed.
  • Support their group throughout a range of activities, academic sessions and small group work.
  • Share personal university journey and experience.
  • Provide pastoral and logistical support to participants, resolving any minor issues and communicating any concerns to MSC staff.
  • Establish rapport and create a sense of community amongst summer school participants.
  • Ensure that good order and behaviour is maintained and that regulations are not breached - taking account of Safeguarding/Child Protection Policy and Procedures.
  • Communicate any concerns about young people, staff or other ambassadors to staff in charge of the Summer School, following the procedures explained during training.
  • Support MSC in the smooth running of the summer school.

Skills and experience

  • Be a current medical student at a medical school in England
  • Experience and understanding of engaging with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in outreach/access programmes at medical school/university
  • Have a full understanding of the UK education system including experience of GCSEs, A levels (or UK equivalent) and understanding of applying to university through UCAS
  • Have an enthusiasm for higher education and medicine and the ability to explain the benefits of higher education to young people
  • Demonstrate evidence of team working skills, leadership, and taking initiative
