Description

Role
The Communications Officer role has the aim of telling the story of City St George’s, University of London from a student perspective and an institutional or “corporate” perspective. This is normally a full-time permanent role, but the post holder has recently left for a new job at another London university. We are unable to recruit permanently into the role until after PSTOM, so we will need a temporary hire to get us through the next few months.

Duties and responsibilities

In the role, the successful candidate will find stories, write them up for the news section of the website, or pitch them to local and trade media. They will also work with the social media team and staff communications teams to share these stories on various channels (internal and external). To think about what kinds of stories they will be covering, it’s useful to think the main topics below:

  • Employability: how do we prepare our students for the world of work (through studies, placements, volunteering opportunities, mentoring schemes, networking events or entrepreneurship competitions)?
  • Research: has City St George’s ranked well in Higher Education rankings such as the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the Daily Mail University Guide or the Guardian University Guide?
  • EDI: What are we doing to ensure City St George’s is sustainable, inclusive and equitable? This might be events (e.g. a Sustainability Hackathon) or accreditations we have received (e.g. Athena SWAN for gender equality)
  • Embedded in London: How do we give back to the local Islington and London community? This might be activities our Widening Participation team does with local Islington schools, or it might be how we are part of an Islington employer network which has the goal of making the borough better.
  • Student life: They will also cover events that capture student life at City St George’s – writing profiles on any interesting students and covering events, most notably the summer Graduation Ceremonies, which will be a big focus from 10-17 July.

Occasionally, if there isn’t enough information for a full news story, they might work with the social media team or staff communications team to write text for a social media post or gather information for a staff newsletter entry.Anything they write, they will share with relevant people so they can use in their social media, internal comms or marketing campaigns.

Skills and experience

  • Writing skills that are well suited to the task of writing news stories for a generalist audience.
  • Organisational skills
  • Good IT skills would be an advantage as training will be available in using our content management system to get stories live on the City St George's website.
  • Interpersonal skills as the role will involve emailing and speaking to people on a consistent basis
  • Availability to work in the office (Abacus House) at least two days a week, Monday as that's our team day, plus one of Tues/Weds/Thurs. Thursday typically would give most overlap with line manager. The candidate is welcome to work in the office more often if they wish to.
Full availability on 10 July and 13-16 July to cover all of our Clerkenwell and Moorgate Graduation Ceremonies: https://www.citystgeorges.ac.uk/news-and-events/events/2026/july/summer-graduation-2026

Location
Abacus House 2 days a week, WFH 3 days a week
