Description

Role

The University of Leicester is seeking enthusiastic, reliable and motivated Duty Managers to join the Sport & Active Life team on a part-time, weekend basis for an initial six-month period, with the potential for extension. Based at either the Danielle Brown Sports Centre or the Roger Bettles Sports Centre, this role may involve cross-site working, although a base site will be allocated upon appointment.

Acting as the senior operational lead on shift, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient and customer-focused operation of a diverse range of sport and fitness facilities. These include swimming pool, sauna, steam and spa areas, fitness suites, studios and outdoor pitches, ensuring that all users experience a welcoming, inclusive and professionally managed environment in line with University standards.

Duties and responsibilities

You will provide visible leadership during your shifts, supervising reception, fitness and recreation staff while ensuring facilities are opened, operated and closed in accordance with University procedures. You will maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and service, overseeing routine maintenance checks, reporting defects promptly and ensuring smooth shift handovers through accurate record keeping.

A key aspect of the role involves delivering excellent customer service by responding professionally to feedback and complaints and fostering a positive experience for all users. You will act as a first responder to emergencies, including those within aquatic and spa areas, carry out daily health and safety checks, and ensure incidents are correctly recorded and escalated. Administrative responsibilities include managing bookings, memberships and financial transactions through the XN Leisure Management System, as well as supporting staff rotas and operational communications.

Skills and experience

You will have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A–C or equivalent, along with previous experience in a customer-facing role within a sport or leisure environment. You will demonstrate sound knowledge of health and safety procedures, the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations, and confidence using IT systems such as Microsoft Office and leisure booking software.

Strong leadership skills and the ability to take responsibility while on shift are essential. A Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award is required for the role, although training will be provided if not already held. A First Aid at Work certificate, NPLQ Lifeguard qualification or Pool Plant Operators certificate would be advantageous but are not essential.
